Mobility Scooter, Hitch and Lift Needed!

Meet Laurie Hooper! She has cerebral palsy and is Deaf. She
has faced challenges her entire life with a multitude of physical barriers in her environment.  She endured many childhood surgeries and was
recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer so is facing surgery
again. She embraces these challenges with courage and determination! For several
years Laurie has needed a walker for mobility but now she needs to upgrade to a mobility scooter.

She is a social worker employed at a nonprofit organization located in a mental health setting that provides services for
Deaf and Hard of Hearing clients in the Metro D.C. area. She has worked in this field more than 25 years and has happily devoted her career to helping others without concern for monetary gain.

After living in a small condo for several years, Laurie had to face the reality that the 13 stairs into and out of her condo were becoming more and more difficult and dangerous to use. She decided it was best for her to find a more accessible home. It was challenging to find an
affordable yet livable space! So
while her new home has an accessible interior, she has a LONG walk from the condo to
her car over a variety of uneven and sloped surfaces. She needs an increase in mobility accommodation such as a travel
scooter. A scooter would allow Laurie to maintain independence and have the ability and energy to get to work and do the activities of everyday living. In addition to a scooter, she needs a trailer hitch installed on her car. Then she needs a hitch-mounted power lift to carry the scooter on her car. These are expensive items.

Laurie is a person who loves being with people and having fun. She is a diehard hockey fan. She has a fabulous sense of humor and often says that laughter is the best medicine for the soul. Laurie spends a lot of time listening to the problems of others and helping them in any way she can. She is truly an inspiration to anyone she meets. We, Laurie’s friends, want to step up and help her. Will you step up with us?
