In mid-October Dottie West, who is 5 years old, came down with what seemed to be a little virus. When she began to have pain in her legs, Jessie took her to the doctor where they ran some blood work. Everything came back fine, and the pain was attributed to her body processing the virus. A couple days later it all went away and Dottie felt healthy again.
On Monday, November 4, the pain returned in Dottie’s legs and she was having a hard time walking. An appointment was made at the doctor’s for the next morning. At that appointment, more blood work was done that came back much different. Tests were begun and later that day, the doctors gave the diagnosis of leukemia. Since she had begun to run a low fever during the day, she was immediately taken into the emergency room where IV’s were started. Later in the evening, November 5, she was flown to Doernbecher’s Children Hospital in Portland, where specialists confirmed through more tests that the leukemia is present.
Pete, Louis (12) & Penny (7) have joined Jessie and Dottie at the hospital. Many other family members are joining them there as well. Dottie is having procedures today that will help diagnose the type of leukemia and the best course of treatment.
Many have asked how they can help the family. The financial implications for their family are massive and long-term. Jessie and Pete will be taking time away from their jobs and there will be multiple ongoing travel expenses, including meals, housing, gas, etc. in addition to all of the regular monthly cost of living and care for their other children.
