Alex Needs Our Help!
On August 20 my friends, Alejandre Phillips-Richards and Janet Baker, returned to Tucson after a well-deserved vacation visiting relatives in Texas. Unfortunately, a very nasty surprise awaited them: two freezers and one refrigerator in their garage had lost power while they were gone, and all the contents were ruined. Needless to say, they have a big mess to clean up, as well as a significant financial loss.
Tucson summers can be challenging, and this summer has seemed especially brutal. Earlier, the community garden created by Alex suffered greatly in the blistering heat, despite regular watering and tender care. It also seems likely that the recent monsoon storms, with high winds and power outages, were a factor in the devastating power interruptions in the garage.
Alex has already contacted her insurance company and is awaiting word on what, if anything, will be covered by her policy. In the meantime, her business and charitable operations are interrupted while she and Janet attempt to recover from this disaster.
As a self-employed business person, Alex’s income is tied directly to her ability to work and to have the necessary supplies to do that work—catering, preparing custom meals, and creating awesome baked goods. Her regular volunteer work—feeding seniors, including cultivating the garden for fresh produce to include in the meals she prepares for them—is adversely affected, too.
Alex has given a lot to the Tucson community, and she could really use a hand right now to help restore her normal operations as quickly as possible. Alex calculates her loss of frozen food at $8,000-$9,000. That figure does not include her temporary loss of income while she and Janet regroup. Any funds collected over the requested amount will be used to restart the community garden. As one of Alex and Janet’s many local fans, I want to help them get back on their feet.
If you can help out with any amount, Alex, Janet, and I would deeply appreciate it. Thank you!
