Fairyglen Animal Sanctuary Ireland

This sanctuary is the home of 70 cats in Co. Roscommon in Ireland. These cats were abandoned, are older, sick or feral. Marie also takes in pregnant cats and mothers and has a special maternity ward for them. New arrivals stay at an isolation unit before they can join the rest and explore the new surroundings.


The cats are free to roam the mountains, but also have indoor spaces available to them. Other animal shelters keep cats in cages the whole time, while here they are free to come and go as they want. When it’s sunny, they like to lounge on top of the cages. There are no busy roads around, and certainly no rodents.


Daily food, cat litter, their vet care, flea and tick treatments are expensive. Marie is looking to get an indoor area heated for them for the winter.


Volunteers help run the sanctuary and visitors are welcome. I visited last April and took some semi-professional photos. I live too far away, so I help fundraising.
