The purpose of my reach out today is to seek financial support for a dear friend of mine who is in need of costly, but imperative healthcare treatments. Asking for help is not easy, but in cases such as this I’m at the mercy of you - my family, friends, and network to help a friend through incredibly tough times.
I’ll start my request with introducing you to one of the best humans I’ve met, Mark Rensberger. I have known Mark for over 40 years. He has been a true friend to me and my family since the 80s. His character speaks for itself – he is honest, selfless, giving (at times, to a fault) and has dedicated his time and efforts to God with several overseas trips.
In September of 2022 Mark was sitting at a stop light when his truck was violently struck by another driver. The impact resulted in damage to vertebrae in his back, four vertebrae in his neck and a lasting brain injury. The injuries have caused intolerable headaches that last to this day, severe memory loss, and interruptions to his daily thought patterns.
He has undergone months of chiropractic rehab for his neck and back with no improvement. He was also referred to a pain management specialist who helped with temporary pain relief and recommended opiates (which Mark declined to proceed with). In January of this year he was referred to a spinal institute and underwent a bilateral RFA surgery on four vertebrae in his neck. This procedure was supposed to remove the unbearable headaches, but it was not successful. After a six week recovery, his surgeon recommended he see a neurologist for additional evaluation as well as physical therapy to restore his strength from his body being dormant for six months. After this stint in PT, his therapist suspected that a traumatic brain injury was undiagnosed at the time of the accident, causing the ongoing pain and inability to think straight on a day to day basis.
As Mark continues to seek guidance and improvements to his health, his path to recovery has become increasingly more challenging. He has been refused by three neurologists due to lack of health insurance. One even called him a “liability” and hung up on him. After eight months of continuing to seek care, he found a neurological facility to conduct assessments. After an MRI and many tests, they uncovered substantial damage to multiple points of Mark’s brain. He has since been in brain therapy for almost four months and while the pain is still evident, he has finally seen some minor improvements. The neurologist is recommending that he undergoes a special procedure to stop pain and memory loss, but his case must be reviewed and approved due to lack of insurance as it is an expensive procedure.
On top of the health complications, as you can imagine, the consequences of this accident has significantly impacted his ability to work and bring in the appropriate funds to support his increasingly costly healthcare needs. Mark lost his business and associated income, putting him in a position of increased financial debt with no end in sight. He’s lost his home, moved in with a loved one, and continues to struggle with the Lawyers and insurance company that are attempting to corner him into settling.
I am asking you today to help Mark during his time of need. Please keep him in mind this holiday season and into 2024 as you are sharing with others, to help him tackle some of his medical needs. It would be a blessing to see that he is approved for this health critical procedure and my friends part in his recovery, would mean so much to me, my family and most importantly to Mark.
