Ever since I was a teenager, my life has been about making the biggest difference in the world I can make. I've spent years in Africa doing HIV testing and counselling, education and youth empowerment projects, and I recently left my career knowing that there was something bigger calling me, something in the world that is happening that would be a greater use of me as a resource.
Well folks, this is it.
Tens of thousands of migrants are fleeing war-torn Syria in hopes of not just living better lives, but living at all. Thousands and thousands and thousands of people have died as a result of the crisis in Syria, slaughtered like cattle - men, women and children shot and beheaded, killed in cold blood. Over 2.500 people have died this year alone on the journey trying to flee, many drowning attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea, as a lot of you witnessed when the photo surfaced of the toddler who's body washed up on a beach in Turkey. The crisis continues to worsen...every day, thousands of people are fleeing Syria, dozens die on the way desperately trying to enter Europe in hopes of literally getting to continue their lives.
This is what I'll be doing: There are thousands of people at refugee "camps" in Europe, particularly in Northern France, where they are attempting to enter the UK. They don't have access to basic necessities, like clean drinking water, and are going into the forest to drink dirty water from ponds and rivers. I'm going to France to do whatever is needed to get necessities to people, mostly clean drinking water. I'll be coordinating with other individual volunteers that are already there to organize relief, resources, support peace keeping amoung refugees and working with children, doing what I can to give them the opportunity to be children in these completely unimaginable circumstances. I'm currently in London, and plan on leaving to the refugee camps in Calais within 3 days.
The funds I raise will go first to my travel and living expenses, which I promise to keep frugal. I will put any remaining funds into providing resources for refugees, like clean drinking water, socks, soap, basic medicine, etc. Currently many European countries are debating how many people to accept as refugees, if any at all. There is a lot of relief coming from the governments of the European Union, but not enough for the growing number of people.
I invite you to donate generously, to maximize the relief I can provide. Donations of ANY amount will be greatly appreciated, and the difference between $5 and $10 could be 5 more people having water, or medicine more one more child; the difference between $50 and $200 could mean medicine for 8 more families, etc...Please give what you can, and please don't hesitate as the need is immediate.
I'll be posting updates periodically as I'm on the field. I'll also be posting a financial report of the use of the funds at the end of my time there, or earlier depending on how long I'm there and what's appropriate.
Thank you, and stay tuned!!!
Love and light,
