The outstanding jazz program at Esperanza High School in Anaheim, CA, continues its tradition of excellence under the direction of Bradley Davis, currently in his 9th year at EHS.
Adding to this tradition, it was announced this week that EHS’s Jazz I band will compete in the Charles Mingus Festival and Competition in New York City.
After audition CD’s were submitted, only 3 high school jazz bands and 3 music/specialty high school jazz bands were selected nationwide.
Not only will Jazz I compete, they will attend musical clinics with professional musicians, participate in jazz jam sessions, and learn more in general about Charles Mingus’ unique music.
This event will be held Feb. 12 - 15. That only gives us a month to raise the $20,000 needed so these talented musicians can compete in New York.
Jazz I is no stranger to competing in New York. In 2012, EHS’s Jazz I was one of 15 bands chosen out of 111 bands nationwide for the Essentially Ellington competition at NY’s Jazz at Lincoln Center.
At the Reno International Jazz Festival, Jazz I earned 1st place in 2013. The next year, they performed in the evening showcase concert at the University of Nevada, Reno arena in front of an audience of thousands.
Also in 2014, they performed at another great venue—the Hollywood Bowl—as part of the Playboy Jazz Festival.
EHS jazz alums are currently attending renowned jazz schools including Julliard, Manhattan School of Music, and the University of North Texas.
This will be an amazing experience for Jazz I and was something we hadn’t anticipated in our booster budget which, among many other things, covers the cost for all competitions. With only a month to raise the money necessary for this trip, we can’t use normal fundraising options.
