Dexter

On September 19th, Dexter had surgery on his eye to treat entropion. His eye got infected, so the surgery had to be redone a week later. Everything seemed to be okay after the second surgery. His eye healed and he was himself again.

On October 15th, Dexter got sick. He refused to eat or drink water. He had a fever, he was drooling excessively and had green discharge from both eyes, as well as bumps all over his body. He also struggled to walk or get up without crying out in pain. He was taken to the vet and they diagnosed him with ear infections and an upper respiratory infection, and said the bumps were an allergic reaction to something. He was given antibiotics and drops for his eyes and ears. Over this past weekend, he got worse. The medication didn’t seem to be helping at all. He began coughing up blood.

He was seen at the Purdue emergency animal hospital where we received shocking news. His lungs are completely full of fluid. The vet said it’s either pneumonia from aspirating vomit during his surgery or blastomycosis. They said it’s a very good chance that he may not pull through. We want to do everything we can to provide all the fight that he needs. He is on oxygen right now and even with it, his levels won’t go above 90%. He may need a ventilator which would cost $1000 per day he’s on it. He will be in the ICU for about two days pending results from the blastomycosis test.
