Last summer Marla was diagnosed with Incurable Colorectal Cancer. This past year has been incredibly difficult for the Ryan family with Marla's surgery and twice-monthly chemotherapy treatments.

The harsh side effects of the treatments mean Marla is physically unable to do many of the things she was previously able to do. As a result, she has had to give up her teaching position and reduce her home responsibilities. The financial pressures are an added concern during an already difficult time.

“I am a teacher, educator, advocate and a firm believer in bringing awareness to things that are important to me. I’ve been raising awareness about dwarfism since my son was born 16 years ago and now I’m turning down another path of awareness. On Sept 2 of this year I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Not a polyp, a full blow tumour ( aka lesion) with lymph node involvement. It’s surprising because I’m only 48. Isn’t this an “old persons” cancer ? Nope. I’ve been following @bowelbabe for a year or so and I truly listened to her story and my body. I had blood in my stool ( poop), my bowel habits changed and then I started to lose weight. Because of her advocacy and awareness I went for a colonoscopy. Bam! I can honestly say I was shocked. I don’t think anyone expects the words “you have cancer”.

If I can encourage just one person to get a colonoscopy or to listen to their body it will have served it’s purpose.”
