Many years ago Mr. Ralph Morash rescued some horses that were being sent to slaughter. For the past 40 years he has tended and cared for these animals and their offspring. The horses became an icon on the salt marsh dykes between Brooklyn and Windsor NS where they lived between the forest for shelter, and the dyke for grazing. The community was shocked and outraged to learn that a local resident had begun shooting them and planned to shoot all of them. There were a couple of youngsters that were getting out of their contained area and it became apparent the horses needed to be moved to a safer location. One by one all but two pregnant mares were safely moved despite the fact that they had never been handled by anyone except Mr. Morash. The stallions in the herd were gelded.  More bad luck followed when someone took it upon themself to tie one of the remaining mares to a tree and take her baby from her. She was strangled to death. Now, as winter approaches we need to put up additional fencing and some three sided shelters to provide the horses with a way to get out of the harsh winter winds on the dyke at Mr. Morash's property. Over time, these horses have touched many hearts with their plight of surviving a cull and the challenges they and Mr Morash have faced.
