Baltimore’s own beloved Lochearn Pool needs your help. Today, on what would have been opening day of its 62nd season, disaster struck in the form of a fire. This fire destroyed the bath house which also houses the adjoining office and pump room which literally keeps the pool running. Without this building, the pool and community club can neither open nor function.
In his 1976 History of Lochearn, written for the Bicentennial, Arthur Mormann writes, “The only reason the Lochearn Community Club is in existence today is because a small group of men and women had the hope, courage, and determination to put forth the necessary effort and time to make a dream become a reality.”
For six decades, Lochearn Community Club has survived, sometimes by razor-thin margins, because of one sheer and simple fact: a small but dedicated group of people believed. The club survived; the community thrived.
For six decades, this pool has served as a beacon and bastion for kids and parents alike. For countless families, it has been an essential, invaluable form of summer childcare, but it’s also been so much more than that. For some, it was an oasis from everyday life. For many, it was a timeless and ageless utopia: a way of life and an ideal place for our diverse community’s children to grow and blossom into responsible and flourishing young adults.
Lochearn Pool has taught generations of children to swim, but what’s more it has taught them about the importance of friendship, about confidence and leadership and empathy and compassion regardless of age, race, gender, or creed.
For six decades, Lochearn Pool has been there, empowering Baltimore’s youth and strengthening its community.
Remember the “Save the Clock Tower” campaign in Back to the Future? Well, this is our clock tower. It literally had a clock on the top. Remember the fond 80s nostalgia you felt for the Hawkins kids in Stranger Things? This pool was our Hawkins. It is responsible for more happy childhoods than can be counted. Remember every single movie where the community comes together to overcome adversity and save the beloved local institution? This is that moment. Baltimore needs this pool. The community of Lochearn needs this pool. We need this pool.
Maybe you’ve never been to Lochearn. Maybe you’ve never been to Baltimore. Yet maybe still, there is some place in your childhood memory that meant the absolute world to you, that made you who you are, and that part of you wants and maybe even needs to believe that that place still exists for the next generation of children to come, to learn and to grow. This is that place.
Funny thing about the word utopia. Some say it means “happy place.” Others say it means “no such place.” Today, you can help make that difference. Today you can help make Lochearn Pool a place of happiness again.
