Future Ancestors Waashayshkwun Grants

100% of proceeds collected through our GoFundMe account will be invested in the Waashayshkwun Grant Fund.

The Waashayshkwun Grants are awarded to Indigenous, Black, racialized, LGBTQ2S+, and disabled independent service providers based in what is now known as Canada. Despite facing disproportionate barriers, they continue to centre climate justice and equity in their education, lives, and services. These grants are intended to provide the recipients with financial relief and with the opportunity to invest in their business development.

'Waashayshkwun' means 'the sky is clear' in Michif-Cree. By distributing grants for financial relief and business development to independent contractors, we aim to clear their skies as they're clearing Mother Earth's. Learn how to say 'waashayshkwun' with proper pronunciation here

Grant recipients will be selected by a Future Ancestors Review committee following a holistic assessment model informed by Indigenous ways of knowing (the Relational Model for Teaching and Learning is informed by Blackfoot teachings), equity, anti-ageist, and accessibility lenses.

The grant cycles will be triggered after the pool has $15,000 in available funds. Future Ancestors Services Inc. currently  collects funds through donation tickets on events and through this GoFundMe account.

Future Ancestors Services Inc. and the Future Ancestors Constellation

Future Ancestors Services Inc. is an Indigenous and Black-owned, youth-led professional services social enterprise that advances climate justice and equity with a lens of ancestral accountability. We have three pathways of work, one of which is hosting the Future Ancestors Constellation.

The Future Ancestors Constellation is an online platform that features Indigenous, Black, racialized, disabled, young and/or LGBTQ2S+ independent speakers, trainers, researchers, and artists available for hire. All ‘Constellation Stars’ are based in Canada and centre climate justice and equity in their work.

The Constellation seeks to uplift the voices and services of people who face disproportionate barriers yet continue to centre Earth and community in their work. We provide the Constellation Stars with a portal to promote their services, with the option of subscribing to a space- the Entrepreneur's Galaxy- where they can access resources, opportunities, mentorship, and community that supports them in growing their businesses. This, in turn, empowers them to contribute to and shape society and economies with more visibility and influence.

There are no resources in Canada that chart diversity in the professional services sector as we do: our Constellation is a one-stop resource that allows business, organizations, and governments to redirect economic opportunities to the climate justice-oriented service providers we feature. Ultimately, the clients who use our Constellation are better positioned to produce work outcomes and spaces that equitably honour people and Earth.

While the Waashayshkwun Grants are not solely for people featured in our Constellation, some grants will be made available exclusively to the Constellation.
