Futrell Family Car Accident Tragedy Fund

Donation protected
On August 10, 2019, my extended family was returning from Lynchburg, VA to East Tennessee.  We had taken the ashes of our step dad to VA for burial.  It was a moving service.  We went to my step brother's family home where they hosted a wonderful gathering before returning home.  My older sister and her fiancé were in one vehicle.  My husband, daughter, and my mom were in another vehicle.  And my little sister, her husband and two grown sons in another vehicle.  They were on I-81, almost to I-40.   Andrew, the younger son, was driving in the slow lane, minding his own business, when suddenly, out of nowhere they were rear-ended by a drunk driver, going over 100 mph, as estimated by the TN State Troopers on the scene.  Not only was the punk, in someone else's car (his girl friend's dad's), and drunk, he had no auto insurance.  The insurance that his probably now X-girlfriend's dad has is the minimal you have to have in order to be not be considered un-insured.  So, in other words, terrible insurance.  Their insurance, Safe Auto, will not even discuss the matter.

The attorney that my sister, Mandy and her husband, Roger, spoke to, determined that neither the punk nor the owner of the vehicle have any money worthy of a law suit.  There's just nothing there.

Since the punk refused a blood alcohol test on the scene, the officers had to obtain a warrant, which delayed the test.  They arrived at the hospital approximately four hours after the accident.  The results were received Monday (9/16).  His blood alcohol content,  after four hours, was 0.14 (1.75 times the legal limit).  He was arrested today (9/18) and charged with four counts of felony vehicular assault.  So, hopefully, justice will prevail.

Like many Americans, neither Andrew nor his older brother, Christopher, can afford health insurance.  They both were transferred to UT hospital via LifeStar.  They've each received a bill for $45,200 for each of their helicopter rides and $700 each for the 1 mile ambulance transport to each helicopter.  Including  these bills, the hospital and doctor bills that have already been received add up to over $341,800.  Neither have been released to return to work.  The wages lost combine to $2,600/week.  They are in the sixth week now.

We are trying to raise money to offset the enormous medical bills and loss of income during their healing phase.

The entire family's lives have been turned upside down. Yet, they each are extremely grateful to God Almighty, that every one of them survived the horrific event, with no life altering damages.

Please keep this sweet family in your thoughts and add them to your prayer list.  Any donation you can offer will be extremely appreciated.

Please share in as many ways as you can!!!

In Him,
Lori Thompson

Roger Futrell (passenger seat) was the least injured.  Several ribs were broken, many bruises, a punctured lung, and his face and eyes bled out, except where his ball cap rested.

Mandy Futrell (back seat behind passenger seat) had several ribs broken and glass opacities in her lungs.  Her right shoulder was dislocated. She had two tears in her rotator cuff, (one part 80% torn) and the ligaments are inflamed.  She is scheduled to have rotator cuff surgery on 10/18.  (Her Doctor called for an MRI on 9/5.  Had UT ordered an MRI when she was in severe pain while a patient in the hospital , she may have already had that surgery.)

Christopher (back seat behind driver) also had glass opacities in his lungs.  His ear was ripped off to the point it was dangling by a thread.  He sat in the ER at UT for 18 hours without one drop of water or one bite of food, as they were waiting for the eye surgeon to determine if he needed surgery.

Andrew (the driver) also had glass opacities in his lungs.  When the truck finally stopped flipping it landed on Andrew's head.  He has a huge gash along his hairline and the top of his head was scalped.  He also broke both bones in his left arm completely through (of course, he's left handed).  The bones are now held together with titanium plates.  And the tendons in his thumb were severed.  He was in ICU for four days and a hospital room for another four.

This is the Futrells' GM 4-door, full bed pick up truck that was tossed around like a small toy.  (They had just paid the last payment on it.)
