Funeral/Living Expenses for Refugee Family

Donation protected
For those of you who know me, you know that I have been friends with this family for many years.  They arrived in Phoenix in 2013, after spending 8 long years in  a refugee camp.  Since their arrival, they have encountered many hardships, such as the father, Atakelti, getting hit by a car while riding his bicycle.  The injuries that he received caused him to lose his job.  The family was one day away from eviction when I asked for your assistance.  Your generous donations enabled them to pay their rent and seek subsidized housing, where they are currently living.

Unfortunately, with a heavy heart, I have to ask for your help again.

In July, Atakelti, the sole bread winner, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.  He fought valiantly but is now under the care of hospice.  He doesn't have much time left.  His family is devastated, as they truly believed that the Cancer Center was going to cure him.

Atakelti is a wonderful, loving father, whose patience and calm demeanor amidst the chaos of his busy home is inspirational.  He and his wife, Tsega, have 7 children, who range in age from 18 months to 20 years old.  Angesom, the oldest boy, graduated from high school last year and is now the only earner in the family.  He's still a kid and is reeling with the news of his adoptive father's prognosis.  He loves Atakelti so much, and has told me time and time again that he never felt any less loved by his dad because he is adopted.  Their biological children are Haben, who is in 8th grade, Semira, the only girl (6th grade), Merhawi (2nd grade), Adonai (kindergarten), Abiner (3 years old) and the baby, Hermann.

This family is very loved and respected in the Ethiopian community Atakelti's loss will be felt by many.  For me, I will always remember how he laughed at himself (and me) as we taught each other our VERY different languages.  He was always so quick with a smile, even though he told me he hated his teeth!!!

I am raising funds for the funeral and to give them a little bit of ease during this time of transition.  Tsega will be looking for work as soon as her two youngest are in day care and preschool.  It will be difficult for her to be a single mother to her large family and I am hoping that money will not be a major concern for her while she is mourning the loss of her wonderful husband.

All funds will go directly to Tsega.
