UPDATE: Viewing for my mother is Monday (08/10) 10 am - 11:45AM at Cochran Funeral Home at 905 High Street Hackettstown, NJ 07840 followed by a memorial mass at 12 pm St. Mary's church located at 303 High Street Hackettstown, NJ 07840.
My mother was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia back in December 2019. When we brought her to the hospital on December 22nd it was made apparent very quickly that she was seriously ill. She deteriorated rapidly and by December 23rd she was sedated and an emergency tracheostomy was placed. She was flown to Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philly. She spent 40 days in the hospital fighting for her life while undergoing chemo and other treatments. After being released at the end of January she came home to get chemo two more times. She reached remission but it didn't last for long due to the genetic mutation FLT3 which makes this leukemia aggressive. On July 26th we brought her back to the hospital due to bone pain and bruising. After blood work, it was revealed that the leukemia was very active again. They transferred her from St.Lukes in Stroudsburg to St.Lukes in Bethlehem. Then after more tests, they transferred her on July 27th to Fox Chase Cancer Center. That Monday was the last time that I was able to talk to my mother. The last thing she text me Monday night was "I love you too." Tuesday morning I got a phone call saying that she suffered a brain bleed and had a hemorrhagic stroke. They performed plasmapheresis on Tuesday in hopes that we could lower her white blood count to buy us some time to transfer her to Temple University Hospital and place her in their Neuro ICU. The plasmapheresis did not buy us as much time as we hoped and her white blood count started to rise not even 24 hours later. She was able to receive one dosage of chemo in hopes that would help. The brain bleed did grow and the brain pressure became so unmanageable that they had to perform an emergency craniectomy. The craniectomy was performed in hopes to relieve the pressure on the brain. They discovered moderate brain bruising but hoped that since the stroke was on the right side of the brain she would still be able to speak. Unfortunately through the course of the next couple of days many procedures and medications were given to relieve the pressure on the brain and try to slow the bleeding. Between leukemia and the brain bleed it was far too much for the body to handle. Her body was not absorbing oxygen and expelling CO2 as it should have. She started to accumulate fluid in her lungs and heart due to the massive amount of fluids and blood being pumped into her. I spent Friday with her and the rest of our family got to spend Saturday with her. The doctor called Sunday morning explaining that the lab results were showing blood counts that were not compatible with life. She spiked a fever and her blood pressure and heart rate started to drop. Sunday night (08/02) at 8:58 pm the doctor called and told us that she had just passed due to heart failure. This was not something that was planned and it was very sudden. There was no life insurance in place and we are trying to give my mother the memorial that she deserves. She had 4 children and 3 grandchildren that are going to miss the hell out of their mother and grandmother. Those grandchildren are not going to know what it's like to grow up with my mom as a grandmother but we are never going to let them forget her.
