Funeral for May Varas Olmstead, “Mommy May"

With a heavy heart, my family and I are faced with the sudden and devastating loss of my sweet, beloved mother, May Amada Varas Olmstead. May was not only an incredible mother to me, but she was also a cherished and loving sister, aunt, friend and teacher to many.

 

For the last 50+ years, my mother dedicated her whole life to children–caring, teaching and loving them as her own. Her dedication was not only because it was her profession, but she made herself available whenever they needed her as they grew older. Whether in Chile, as a school and religion institute teacher to more than 500 students, or in the last 30 years of her life, as a childcare provider in her daycare in Los Angeles, where parents entrusted her with more than 300 children whom she cared for as if they were her own. To her, every one of them was the grandchildren she never got to have. She would sometimes even buy thoughtful gifts out of her pocket because her love for them surpassed her daycare working hours. Her home was a non-ordinary daycare; she created a haven for children and their families with her sweat and tears–her whole heart was in her work. She always went above and beyond with her duties in everything she did.

 

Her presence, love and devotion brought joy, happiness and inspiration to many people who took part in her circle. Family, friends, and so many students and kids (now grown-ups) tell me what a blessing it was for them to be taken care of by “Mommy May” or have her as a mentor and a teacher. My mother was also a strong and admired leader and teacher in her faith community, The Church of Latter-Day Saints. She was inspirational to so many throughout her life.

 

We are devastated by her passing and are dealing with the shock of her sudden and unexpected departure. As a family, we are now faced with expenses we didn’t foresee. She intended to be here with us for many more years, and so did we. I know that it would mean the world to many to give back and help me and my family give her the farewell she deserves.

Es con gran pesar que mi familia y yo enfrentamos la repentina y devastadora pérdida de mi dulce y amada madre, May Amada Varas Olmstead. May no solo fue una madre increíble para mí, sino que también fue una hermana, tía y maestra querida y amorosa para muchos.

 

Durante los últimos más de 50 años, mi madre dedicó su vida a los niños, cuidándolos, enseñándoles y amándolos como si fueran suyos. Su dedicación no era solo porque era su profesión, sino que estaba disponible cada vez que la necesitaban a medida que crecían. Ya sea en Chile, donde fue profesora escolar y de instituto de religión a más de 500 alumnos, o en los últimos 30 años de su vida, como proveedora en su guardería en Los Ángeles, donde los padres le confiaron a más de 300 niños a quienes acogió como si fueran suyos. Para ella cada uno de ellos fueron los nietos que nunca llegó a tener. A veces incluso compraba obsequios de su propio bolsillo porque su amor por ellos iba más allá de las horas de trabajo de su guardería. Su hogar no era cualquier guardería, ella creó un hermoso espacio para los niños y sus familias con su sudor y lágrimas; todo su corazón invertido en su trabajo. Ella siempre superaba sus deberes en todo lo que siempre hizo.

 

Su presencia, su amor y devoción entregaron alegría, felicidad e inspiración a muchas personas que formaban parte de su círculo, familia y amigos incluidos, pero también a tantos estudiantes y niños (ahora adultos) que me dicen hasta el día de hoy qué gran bendición fue que los cuidara “Mami May” o que la tuvieran como mentora y maestra. Mi madre también fue una líder y maestra formidable y admirada en su comunidad de fe, la Iglesia de los Santos de los Últimos Días. Ella fue una inspiración para muchos a lo largo de su vida.

 

Estamos absolutamente devastados con su fallecimiento y estamos lidiando con el impacto de su partida repentina e inesperada. Como familia, ahora nos enfrentamos a gastos que no previmos. Tenía la intención de estar aquí con nosotros muchos años más, y nosotros también con ella. Sé que significaría mucho para algunos que la conocieron devolver la mano y ayudarme a mí y a mi familia a darle la despedida que se merece.

 

Esto puede servir como una oportunidad para devolver todo el amor puro y la alegría que compartió con el mundo. Les agradecemos su apoyo en este momento desgarrador en mi vida y la de mi familia. Su legado de amor incondicional vivirá por siempre en nuestros corazones.
