Background:
On June 6th, I received news that my aunt, Camila Garcia, died in a hotel in Ohio from unknown causes. Whether murder was the cause is still being investigated.
Camila wasn’t only an aunt, but she was an important mother figure for my cousins and a huge caretaker for my grandparents in El Salvador.
Being a trans woman who was born in El Salvador and later immigrated here, she was an outspoken advocate for our Latinx and LGBT communities and despite facing heavy discrimination, she faced every opposing obstacle of hate with a loving heart and a caring soul. And I think that’s what makes writing this all the more difficult to do.
Currently, due to COVID and other factors, we don’t have the funds to transfer the body, and pay for the processes of a funeral and burial. Given these circumstances, I’ve decided to make a GoFundMe for our family.
Memoir:
Instead of adding a memoir of my own, I asked my cousins how they felt about losing her (since she was their mother-figure), and this is what they said (roughly translated from Spanish):
"There are plenty of things that l could mention about Camila, but l strongly believe that she was more than just my aunt. We had a close relationship. She played a mom's role during a time for me. However, as time passed, she became much more than that. She became a best friend and confidant. Her soul, her joy and comprehension will forever be the best memories that l will have of her. I'll miss her a lot."

Camila’s story is a testament to how living a life of pure love and thoughtful care has impacted the lives of so many.
Current Status:
As it stands, any small contribution would help. We had our funeral planned for the 23rd of June, but due to the ongoing investigation of her death, we've pushed back the day to an undetermined date.
Thanks again, and stay safe.
