Recently, our good friend Ajai lost his dear father.
Madhav Gopal Pillai was 85 years old and passed away in February 2021 due to Covid-19. He was a beloved father, husband, uncle, brother, cousin, and son.
As we all know, funerals, burials, and medical costs are expensive and in these times they are even more challenging given the state of the economy and the unemployment rate.
Some of Ajai's high school friends and I are sponsoring this Go Fund Me campaign to help Ajai and his family with the costs mentioned above. For the family, this is a time of grieving and we believe they should not also have to worry about costs and funds.
Personally, I have known Ajai since the first grade. We attended elementary school, junior high (not middle school), and high school together. We've traveled to New York and Seattle together and attended hundreds of ball games together. He also attended my wedding and both of my parents' funeral services. He is like a brother to me and I want to help him like one. And I'm sure many of his friends feel the same way about him.
Last, I'd like to tell you a story about Mr. Pillai. When we were in first grade, while waiting around after school, Mr. Pillai used to make shadow puppets on an empty wall by the drinking fountain. He told me it was something he had learned back in his childhood home of India. I can remember it so clearly. He'd contort his arms and move his fingers and then magically a parrot or a monkey would appear. You could tell it made him happy to make us happy. That's the man I want to remember and that's the man I hope we can help bury with the dignity and grace he deserves.
