Funeral Expenses for Shirley Groff
Donation protected
Shirley Mae Groff (nee Starnes) was born on September 12th, 1928 in Henryetta, Oklahoma to George Washington Starnes and Viola Anne Starnes (nee Snow).
She passed away on August 20, 2019. She was 90 years young.
Growing up, mom was always the disciplinarian but she also was extremely fair and didn't have a cruel bone in her body. If any of the kids needed paddling it was because we deserved it and wasn't just because she was angry at something.
When I was a wild hippy teen in the '60s instead of turning her back on me she embraced my differences and welcomed all of my friends into our home regardless of who they were. If they wanted to sleep overnight they had to be in the door by 11 pm. In turn, my friends would help with daily chores which she welcomed immensely. My friends would think of her often as their mom. It was heartwarming.
Mom left no will and no life insurance. She was retired Texas State Employee and received a small income from that along with her social security.
She is survived by a sister Rosalena George, Three children, James, Terry, and Vickie and by many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In a nutshell, we can't afford a large funeral and the service that we can get is still beyond us right now.
That's why I'm reaching out to you.
It's hard asking for money but we have no recourse other than letting her be cremated by the City and placed in a pauper's grave. We need the funds ASAP if not sooner.
Excess donations will be given to St. Judes Children's Research Hospital.
Please help if you can. I will try to pay it forward.
Thank you.
