Mariah was one of many students I have had the pleasure of teaching, and I have also taught her mom and siblings. We just talked about her getting older one of the last days of school. This is one of many losses I have experienced through the years, but losing someone so young is especially difficult. I can still hear her voice saying, “But Ms. Baldwin,” and then smiling. My teacher and mama heart aches for my students who are missing Mariah right now.
When someone so young passes, it is hard to be prepared to pay for their final resting, and this is where we are today. Mariah’s family is unprepared for the costs of her funeral service, and this loss has deeply affected our school community. I want to honor Mariah’s memory with a beautiful going home service, and if any funds remain, I will use them to support her younger siblings with school fees, supplies, and needs for the upcoming school year. When loss occurs, it is hard enough, but the days after—when life goes on and children return to school—being prepared will help prevent added sadness in the days ahead.
