Hoen Chin
(October 7, 1963 - July 29, 2020)
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Hoen Chin. He lived an incredible life, brought joy to many, and died a hero.
Born in Cambodia in 1963, Hoen Chin came to the United States as a refugee in the 1980s and settled in Providence, Rhode Island. While attending Central High School, he gained a reputation as an extremely sociable person who never forgot a face and seemingly knew at least half the population of Rhode Island. After earning his GED, he went to trade school to become an automobile mechanic. Always good with his hands, he learned to fix houses in addition to cars. He was known throughout the community as someone always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Hoen Chin loved to attend and host parties, especially summertime barbecues. He was never happier than when surrounded by his wide circle of friends and family in his backyard. He will be remembered for extending his home to others, his ability to build community, and his love of his Cambodian heritage.
On July 29th, 2020, while enjoying a hot summer day at Narrows Point beach in Bristol with two of his sons and their friend, Hoen Chin saw that the teenage boys were struggling against a rip current and he selflessly sprung into action. Without hesitation, he rushed into the water, swam out to the boys, and helped them to safety. However, tragically, he was pulled under the water and swept up by the riptide, sacrificing his life to save others.
Hoen Chin was the beloved father of nine children (Robert, Adam, Sarah, Jesse, Julian, Joshua, Jadeann, Jordann, and Jordeann), adored grandfather of three (Seth, Armani, and Athena), and cherished husband of Jasmine Im-Tsingtoa. In addition to his many nieces and nephews, he was lovingly known as “Pu,” (Khmer for “uncle”) by countless friends and neighbors throughout Rhode Island’s Southeast Asian community.
We were devastated by Hoen Chin’s sudden and tragic passing, and were not prepared for the high cost of funeral arrangements. In order to give this amazing and beloved person the memorial he deserves, we are reaching out for help and support. Please help us honor the life and heroic sacrifice of Hoen Chin. Any amount you can give is a great help to our family during this most difficult time.
Hoen with his sons, Jadeann (14), Julian (19) and Joshua (16)
