At the beginning of last year, our Dad was diagnosed with stage 4b lung cancer. He was very motivated to fight and beat cancer and went through 6 weeks of chemo and radiation. It was amazing to witness him be treated so aggressively, but stay so healthy and strong throughout it all. Afterward, he was told the cancer was virtually gone! It was like a miracle! He started immontherapy but wasn't able to continue due to getting sick afterward. Slowly, we saw him continually not be able to receive the treatments and get worse. Doctors thought it could possibly be a delayed reaction from the radiation. But later, we found out that the cancer had come back and had spread. He eventually restarted radiation. After that, he was hospitalized for what doctors believed to be post obstructive pneumonia. He was still so eager to aggressively fight the cancer and on the day of his discharge from that hospital stay received chemotherapy along with an immunotherapy drug. He came home for a week but returned to the hospital for fever and complications with keeping up his oxygen despite being on oxygen at home. We had no idea he would never come home again. In less than a week, his health rapidly declined due to what was assumed to be immunotherapy induced pneumonitis, and he was transferred to ICU and put on a ventilator. We were told he had a couple hours to a couple of days to live. Family came together to be there with him. And he continued to fight! For almost 4 weeks we had hoped for a miracle and explained to his care team we could not take him off life support that it was a decision for God to make, not us, and our priority was to honor his wishes to not let him suffocate and manage his pain. On December 28th, he passed away peacefully and quickly with family at his side.
Dad was not scared to leave this earth. He found comfort in his faith and the gospel of Jesus Christ. He grew up and was baptized in an LDS church. But for the past 3 years was an online (unofficial) member of Grace Trinity Church. And the day before he was intubated, pastors came to pray for him and anoint him with oil for a healing and cast away his fear/anxiety he was having about suffocating. He was ready to leave this earth and go home to His Father. God was merciful to spare him the agony of suffocating and allowed him to pass away peacefully.
I know this is a hard time for all of us. We all lost someone very special.
Dad was always so kind and loving, and pretty funny too. Always willing to help out whenever and however he could.
We are grateful to everyone who has shown so much love and support through their prayers and financial assistance through this difficult time. May God abundantly bless you.
Thank you so much.
Love you all.
