Last Monday, on April 19th, Pa Mung Tawng (Legal name: Ma Ram) was arrested by the police in Tulsa, Oklahoma for driving under the influence. He is a close family friend that has struggled with alcoholism for a while now, something that unfortunately many immigrants struggle with due to financial, emotional, and personal issues in the United States.
From the police reports, he was in good physical condition at the time of his arrest, the only issue being intoxication. Yet, by the end of last week, he was taken to the ICU in critical condition. None of his immediate friends or my family were notified by the police; instead, my parents were called by the hospital. In fact, when a couple of his friends went to the police station seeking information, they were delayed multiple times despite the fact that Pa Mung Tawng was already at the hospital. The police lied.
He was declared brain damaged, and put on life support. My parents and I are hoping to figure out what happened from the time of his arrest to being taken to the hospital; the Tulsa police told us he "fell." We highly doubt that falling led to injuries so extreme my father had to decide to take him off life support this past weekend.
In order to find justice and accountability for him, and in turn for my parents who were his next of kin as he had no immediate family in the United States, we are raising fees for his funeral and legal fees. We hope to hire an attorney who can help us investigate into his death and possible police negligence (which we know is all too common in this country, especially when the victims are not white).
As the community and my parents mourn, we hope that you decide to contribute and donate to help us seek accountability and justice. Thank you so much, and God bless you. Topa thupha.
