Funeral Arrangements for Our Mother, Marcia Cope

Thank you so much for taking the time to read about this fundraiser for our mother, Marcia Cope.
Our mother was hit by a vehicle in a hit & run incident on December 29, 2022 after walking to her neighborhood grocery store in the early morning. She was admitted to the ER trauma center where she was diagnosed with a fractured skull, bleeding of the brain, multiple fractured ribs, broken right arm, broken left leg, large hematoma on her left thigh, and multiple abrasions, bruises, and cuts. In addition, her blood pressure was low along with several other problems to include mental confusion and memory loss and she needed a blood transfusion. She was hospitalized for 22 days and during this time she was diagnosed and had many other complications that resulted in more surgeries and treatments. Her brain continued to swell with blood and spinal fluid so surgery was performed in order to make holes on both sides of her skull to insert drain tubes. The drain tubes helped and although she pulled one out due to her delirium and confusion, she became stable. Her blood pressure kept dropping and her white and red blood cells were either too low or too high and more blood transfusions were provided to her along with many medications and etc. She was transferred from the trauma hospital to another hospital under her medical insurance program. There she received continual care and monitoring. She was then transferred to a sister hospital where the surgeries on her broken leg and broken arm were performed. Hardware was inserted into her elbow for alignment and in her knee where the top of her tibia joined. She was placed in soft casts and sent back to the previous hospital where she continued to be monitored and cared for. Once there, they discovered her left lung had collapsed due to a hole and another tube had to be inserted into her lung to drain the air and fluids. Our mother’s ICU delirium and confusion continued to get worse so she had to be monitored 24/7 so that she didn’t pull out anymore tubes. With continual monitoring and etc. each day that also included CT scans and ultrasounds, a blood clot was discovered and a blockage had to be inserted to prevent the flow of the clot to her heart. She was transferred to and from the ICU several times due to complications and blood pressure dropping. She had to have more blood transfusions and her bowels weren’t working and her blood flow was weak. The staff tried giving our mother laxatives in hopes that it would help her have a bowel movement but nothing was working. Mom complained that her stomach hurt and that she wasn’t hungry and refused to eat. Her stomach was hard and distended. Another CT scan was performed which showed an obstruction in our mother’s intestines and emergency operation was needed. Once our mother was opened up, it was discovered that her organs were shutting down and that mom’s intestines were no longer functioning. I was at my mother’s side everyday while she was in the hospital but when they called me after the operation and explained the grave situation, I immediately rushed to my mother’s side to be with her through the end. I called my sisters and my mother’s siblings and placed them on speaker in hopes that our mother could hear them and so that they could say their final words to her. It was very difficult for our family with everyone living in Kansas and not being able to be by mom’s side.
Our mother was a lady who loved her husband and her family with all her heart. She retired on her 65th birthday in 2021 and one month later, her husband broke his neck and was paralyzed from the chest down. Our mother was somewhat dependent on her husband and after his accident, she relied on me. For almost 30 days, I took her to the hospital to see her husband daily until the day we were with him when he said goodbye. He was a strong and caring man who was a Navy Veteran and served during the Vietnam War. My mother and him were inseparable and loved one another deeply.
This has been very difficult for us and I have been struggling with it all. My focus was on my mother the entire time in hopes that she would get better and return home where she kept saying she wanted to go. I didn’t think much about the person who hit my mother and left her laying on the pavement because that wouldn’t heal my mother. But I’m hurting and angry now. I had to go through loss of my father and now we have to bury our mother.
Our mother was born and raised in Kansas and her wishes were to be buried in Kansas alongside her father and other family members with her husband’s urn in her casket with her. She and I live in California and my three sisters, one who passed in 2019, and extended family all live in Kansas. The arrangements to transport our mother and father to Kansas to be buried is mounting up currently over $15,000. Our family is struggling with the funds to honor our mother’s wishes and are pleading for donations in assisting us making our mother’s wishes happen.
Please help us and please pray for us!
Sincerely,
Towanda, Heather, and Holly
