Funeral and medical costs for Wayne Harvey

My name is Jemma, and my father-in-law Wayne Harvey passed away in Denpasar, Bali, on the morning of the 7th Jan 2023 after suffering appendicitis, which progressed to rupture and ultimately took his life. We are fundraising to help cover the costs of his funeral and medical expenses prior to his passing.

Jake, my husband, is Wayne's only son and he flew over as quickly as we could arrange once we found out about Wayne's condition. Wayne had been semi-conscious and unable to speak via phone. Thankfully, when Jake arrived on Thursday afternoon (5th Jan 2023), Wayne was conscious enough to know that Jake was there with him.

Wayne quickly deteriorated on Thursday night and was intubated Friday morning. He passed in the early hours of Saturday morning with Jake and two close friends who have been an incredible support to us and to Wayne during this time.

Wayne was an Australian pensioner and owned no assets to his name. He had purchased insurance for Bali in order to obtain a Retirement Visa to live in the country he loved, however, we have now found out that the insurance he purchased was not the correct kind that he needed, and it will not cover any of his medical bills or funeral costs.

Wayne gained admittance to hospital for treatment via the incredible generosity of his close friend in Bali, who paid for Wayne's admittance using the last of his own available cash. We hoped to resolve the insurance problem and have worked on this with the help of more of Wayne's dedicated friends over the past week, however, it has become clear that there will be no insurance coverage for Wayne's expenses.

We are asking for help from Wayne's friends, family and community to help our family pay for his medical expenses that were incurred before his passing, and to cover the costs for his funeral. The hospital that Wayne was admitted to, although we have struggled with the language barrier, we believe has done all they could for Wayne, continuing treatment for days after hospital policy would usually have required payment before treatment could proceed.

The funds will be used to cover Wayne's hospital bill which is approximately $7000 in Australian dollars. In addition, funds will be used for his funeral which at this stage we believe to be approximately $2000AUD. We would also like to repay $2000 to Wayne’s friend (this was the $2000AUD deposit for hospital admittance) who was so generous as to help Wayne in his hour of need to get him the medical care he needed.

Jake is still in Bali currently, working to put Wayne's affairs in order. Because Wayne's illness was sudden, unexpected and fast, we do not have a clear picture yet of the final state of his finances, other than to know that Wayne had very little, if any, cash funds. He had at least one debt that we are aware of at this stage (a car loan that is still owed almost in full) but we are hoping to clear this debt by sale of the almost-new car.

Any funds raised in excess of expenses will be held in trust for Wayne's grandsons who he loved dearly, Torben and Brynmor.
