On Thursday July 5th while traveling home from a little family vacation over July 4th with my family, my mother Stacey Land, suffered a fatal Brain stem stroke. It did not kill her instantly, but left her unresponsive and on a ventilator to keep her alive. My sister (Ashley) and I (Kristopher) have been staying in the hospital with her since then. It’s been 4 days in the hospital and she is still unresponsive and will not make a recovery. She is essentially brain dead, and if she were to wake up, she would be on the ventilator and a feeding tube the rest of her life. She would be immobile and unable to provide for herself. Knowing our mother, and the busy body she is, she would not want to live this way. We have decided that on Monday July 9th we will pull life support and make sure she isn’t suffering anymore.
My mother is only 43 years old. She had a lot of life ahead of her. My mom and Harley (my 9 year old sister) were living with me temporarily until they got a house. She has been employed at Gecom for over 2 years through Malone staffing (temporary agency). Mom and Harley had big plans of saving money and having a house of their own and having lots of fun together. On June 18th my mom went full time at Gecom. She was so excited to have company provided health insurance and life insurance. Also to be making the most money she had ever made in her life. We were so proud and happy for her as well. She was a strong independent woman who was doing the best she could for her and Harley.
Sadly, my mother’s life and health insurance didn’t, and won’t go into effect until July 17th. One month after her full time hire date. With her injury and inevitably her death occurring before then, we will not have any coverage for funeral or medical bills.
Currently my focus is only 2 things. Giving my mother the farewell she deserves and everyone who loved or knew her a chance to say goodbye and to be able to provide for my little sister the things she needs in the coming months (school supplies, school clothes, book rental, etc). Harley will be going into the 4th grade this year, and her life is going to completely change. I don’t really expect to hit the goal here, but every little bit in this time will be appreciated and put towards my mother’s funeral, burial lot, and any remaining will only be spent on things for Harleys future.
Thank you for your time and consideration in contributing.
