We are raising money to help YaYa Harrison (he/they), a young Black trans essential worker living in Brooklyn, NY, escape an unhealthy work environment and get back on stable financial footing.
Since the start of this year, YaYa has been working as a medical admin at a primary care doctor’s office. Though they are an essential worker, their job has never and continues to not pay hazard. Additionally, he is misgendered and disrespected every single day by both colleagues and clients, despite repeated requests to be gendered correctly.
On top of this, YaYa has been living alone throughout quarantine because his only roommate fled the city in March. This isolation combined with the stress caused by a very unhealthy work environment within the medical field during this crisis has taken a serious toll on YaYa’s health and wellbeing.
That’s why YaYa plans to leave the job in December and begin taking care of himself by working entrepreneurially doing hair, tarot readings, and magic care work, etc. This will not only free YaYa from a destructive, transphobic workplace, but also allow them to have agency over their time, energy, and resources. They will be able to sustain themselves through their talents and passions, while also being able to live and express their gender freely.
By giving to this fund, you will help YaYa:
- Payback past rent from throughout the year
- Eliminate credit card debt that is currently a major monthly burden
- Cover rent + bills for the next couple months so they can quit their job and begin building a freelance client base
With every economic system in the US working against Black trans people, giving to this fund is an act of solidarity with YaYa, making it possible for them to overcome these hurdles and start living the life they want to be living.
