Funds needed to help a new baby

Hi - My name is David Simai, I am a Pediatrician.  I reside in Woodmere, NY.  I work in Cedarhurst in a private practice that I started approximately 13 years ago.

Recently, I walked into a room to by greeted by a sobbing mother.  She wasn't sobbing because her child was sick, but because she felt like she was a failure.  Nursing her baby just was not enough, she noticed that in her first 2 weeks of life, the baby still lost a significant amount of weight. I spent an hour calming her down, explaining that a few days with  supplemental formula will go a long way in helping. The baby took the bottle fine but the mom's tears didn't stop rolling. She still felt she was a failure, especially since so many women around her nurse successfully. I asked the mom if she has any help at home - she replied "no". Do you feel overwhelmed? she replied "yes" - especially when the older brother comes home at 3pm and my husband is not back from his teaching job till 7pm.  I thought to ask local high schools to send a teenager to help for a few hours. I then asked: are you eating well? she said that she gets 1 cooked meal at nights, arranged by a local yeshiva women body. What about breakfast and lunch? "there is no food in the house" was her reply. At this point, i was not concerned about the nursing anymore. In our practice, we see a wide gamete of patients - from the ultra spoiled parents that have no clue what a dirty diaper looks like for the first year (because "my nurse always changes the baby") to this mom, who is literally hungry for food, and blames herself for not nursing adequately. I quickly arranged for a hot lunch for her and her husband. I called the husband, talked about the situation and gave him 1000 dollars so he could buy her her favorite foods. I asked a few friends to match my contribution and got another 1360 dollars committed. later that day, a friend reached out to me, not knowing that I knew about the family's situation.  She said that the family has zero furniture in their house. After doing a little more research, I became motivated to help this nice, young couple. Mom wants to go back to school today so she can help support the family. This is NOT an option in her current state.  The money that we raise will literally help this family put food in the table while the hard working parents get themselves established.

The funds will be spent on the basic needs of the family - mostly food and tuition bills.

The funds will be withdrawn to my personal bank account and will be spent on the family's expenses.

The funds will be withdrawn and transferred to the family via their mentors a local Rabbi and his wife who have been helping the family cope with their struggles
