Funds needed to fell St Mary's Church Tree

St Mary’s Church, Oldswinford

The beloved Copper Beech Tree at the front of St Mary’s Church, Oldswinford, has long been a cherished feature of our church grounds, welcoming the community and appearing in countless wedding and christening photos. Sadly, the tree is now suffering from fungal infection and decay, which has led to a split trunk and structural instability. As a result, it must be removed.

Estimated to be around 150 years old, this tree has been a familiar landmark for generations, a place where thousands of children have played, and a source of beauty for the local community. Its loss is deeply felt, and we are grateful for the many years we have shared in the presence of this outstanding example of nature’s gifts.

The removal of the tree will incur significant costs at a time when St Mary’s is already facing other substantial expenses. Members of the congregation and the wider community are coming together to raise funds to cover these costs. Any contributions to help us meet this financial need will be gratefully received.

What has happened, and could the tree have been saved?

The church car park has been closed for several weeks following professional advice after we noticed changes in the trunk. Following our long-established tree maintenance procedures, a certified arborist inspected the tree and confirmed serious splitting and decay. Due to the tree’s preservation order and its location within a conservation area, we consulted the local authority tree officer. Their assessment is that the tree is beyond any form of remedial action and presents an imminent hazard. For safety reasons, it must be felled.

How much will this work cost?

We have obtained several quotes from qualified contractors. The total cost of safely felling the tree is approximately £10,000, which includes cranes and machinery to ensure the work does not damage the car park surface or surrounding walls.

When will the work be done?

We aim to complete the removal within the next few weeks. Until then, the car park remains unsafe due to the risk of falling branches.

Why can’t the church pay for this?

In the Church of England, each parish is financially responsible for its own running costs. These include building maintenance, utilities, staff salaries, and upkeep of the churchyard. The church does not automatically receive funding from the national Church or the government.

Specifically for tree removal, the responsibility for maintaining safe grounds rests with the parish. Any associated costs—contractors, equipment, or materials—must therefore be met through local fundraising, donations, or parish funds.

Will another tree be planted?

At present, no specific plans have been made. Once the tree has been removed, we will assess the site and explore options for the future. The church is keen to maintain a focal point in this area and will invite the community to share ideas and suggestions.

Can the wood from the felled tree be used?

The church is exploring options for the wood, but we will only know what is possible after the tree has been removed and assessed.
