Funds for Donna Bishop and Sergeant Stubby!
Donna Bishop was the founder and president of the former Alliance for Animals (AfA), the only nonprofit, low cost veterinary clinic in New England, and no kill shelter in Boston from 1985 to 2015. During that time, Donna helped more than 200,000 poor, elderly, disabled, and homeless people, as well as shelters get veterinary care for their animals—who would have otherwise died—at a cost they could afford. Sometimes the vet bills didn’t get paid, but that didn’t stop Donna from helping people regardless of their ability to pay. Many of the surgeries were costly emergencies and without the help of AfA and Donna these animals would have died. There are no other low cost clinics around the Boston area that provided services to people and their pets like AfA, and it is sorely missed. Donna helped thousands of people in so many ways so that they could keep their beloved companions, and now she needs your help.
Donna is now blind, along with a host of other health issues and has difficulty walking. She just turned 70 this past spring, and she depends on The Ride for transportation. Donna has 2 rescue dogs one of which, Sergeant Stubby, is her 9 year-old service dog. Comet, her other dog who is 12, has been going blind and is starting to bump into things now.
As a responsible pet owner Donna has been paying premiums to Embrace pet insurance company since 2012. In November of 2018 Sergeant Stubby had to have emergency surgery to remove a wad of grass that got stuck in his intestines.
The vet bill was 6 thousand dollars. Donna scrambled in a panic to borrow the money because the insurance company expects the bill to be paid up front, and then, reimburses the funds back. She had no credit card, and no way to pay this bill. Sergeant Stubby was going to have to be euthanized if Donna didn’t raise the funds needed to save her beloved service dog and constant companion’s life. She did what any of us would do, she borrowed the money from kind friends and relatives with the promise of paying them back once Embrace pet insurance paid her claim. The insurance company gave her one excuse after another as to why they wouldn’t pay the claim. Donna is now stuck having to repay 6 thousand dollars back to those who helped her save Sergeant Stubby’s life. Like most seniors, Donna’s only source of income is Social Security, which barely pays her living expenses. After years of helping people and their animals, and putting the animals’ needs ahead of the cost, Donna now needs help.
Please help Donna by donating or sharing. Please share to as many pages as you can think of. The motto of Donna and Alliance for Animals was always “When we help animals, we help people,” which Donna did for many years. Let’s help her now when she needs us.
Thank you SO much, every amount helps. Let’s keep this going! :-)
