On Sunday, August 25, 2019 Danielle (McSherry) and Andrew Esposito were standing on the sidewalk outside of a Stop & Shop in Ansonia when they, as pedestrians, were struck by an out of control vehicle. Andrew sustained injuries, however it was his wife Danielle that was pinned between the vehicle and a steel support beam. Danielle's right leg was crushed and hemorrhaging profusely. She was bleeding out.
As a former firefighter and paramedic Andrews quick efforts literally saved her life as he created a tourniquet from a belt of a passer-by. Danielle has been at Yale New Haven Hospital ever since. Our Family met with our team of trauma specialists. It was unfortunately determined that her leg could not be saved and an amputation was the only choice. Over the past month she has had a total of 10 surgeries combating infection and dead tissue. Sadly her right leg was amputated at the hip. Danielle recently had a skin graft in an attempt to close off the full amputation.
We are all looking to begin the healing process and the physical therapy that lies ahead. Danielle and Andrew are now faced with astronomical bills in addition to needing their house transformed to be handicapped accessible. Both Andrew and Danielle are currently out of work due to this horrible accident while they have two children in college.
It takes a community to overcome such tragedy.
