My 11 year old nephew, Anthony, has been recently diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer). He had been complaining every once in a while about his leg and knee aching. Early on, everyone brushed it off as "growing pains." It kept worsening though...until his parents took him to the ER to get checked. After x-rays, he was sent to Shriner's hospital...then he had an MRI and was sent right to PIttsburgh Children's Hospital. They suspected cancer after looking at his MRI results and after 8 biopsies...this was confirmed. Anthony was also recently diagnosed with autism. Although he is high functioning, medical procedures are very stressful for him. So far, he has been a real trooper! He has a long road ahead.
He went this past week to get a full body bone scan. We are praying that they find that the tumors are only in his knee and lower femur. The team of doctors have laid out a 29 week schedule to recovery. This will include surgically installing a port for chemo and medications. He will do a total of 18 rounds of chemo starting this coming week. In July, they will remove the cancerous parts of his knee and femur and replace them with a special metal.
My goal is to remove the monetary worries from both my sister and brother-in-law as they have to go through this with Anthony. The trips to Pittsburgh will mean gas, room, food, and loss of work expenses. They've already had to buy a more reliable car and could really use a cell phone. As a parent, I can't imagine the strength they will need to get through this. Anything you can do will be so greatly appreciated.
Prayers are also much appreciated. Keep his doctors in your prayers as well...Dr. McGough and Dr. Mauer.
