Support for Afghan refugee family - by Akiva
Donation protected
Hello Everyone,
This is Akiva. In honor of my upcoming bar mitzvah, my family is helping to support a newly-arrived refugee family from Afghanistan. We were connected with this family through the organization Refugee Community Connection which helps to match newly arrived families with families to 'adopt' and sponsor them. My parents and I went to meet the family of five, three adults and two very cute kids (aged three and four), so we could see what they needed the most and what their living conditions were like. Only one of the adults speaks a little bit of English, and they know no one else in the area.
They were given $240 dollars when they arrived mainly to buy food and necessities. They have applied for food stamps, but these will not be approved for at least a month, maybe more, and the money that they were given will not last them until then. This means that they will need more money for groceries and other basic things until their food stamps arrive and they are able to find jobs. They are currently sleeping on five mattresses that they have on the floor, but they have no other furniture and are lacking many household necessities. They are in need of many different things, and I want to help them adjust to their new lives. If you are able to help in any way, either by donating financially or by purchasing one of the items on the spreadsheet, we would be very grateful.
All financial donations will go directly to them so they can buy food, basic necessities like toiletries and CTA passes, and basic laptops for the adults.
