On April 21, 2019, a series of coordinated bomb explosions killed hundreds in Sri Lanka as they congregated for Easter Sunday mass.
St. Anthony’s Church, Kochchikade was the first to be hit by an explosion, followed by St Sebastian’s Church in Katuwapitiya, Negombo and the Zion Church in Batticaloa. There were also explosions at the Kingsbury, the Shangri-La hotel and the Cinnamon Grand.
By 3.30pm, Sri Lanka had faced 8 explosions.
As at 8.20 am on April 22, 2019, 290 were reported dead and 500 injured in the attacks.
Given the death toll, there are multiple people who have lost loved one and the main earner in the family. Any support or donations would be greatly appreciated and will 100% go directly to the cause.
In order to increase transparency we would like to formally share the plan for the disbursement of funds.
Funds raised through all your generous donations via gofundme will be remitted into my AUD personal account (Marisha Nareshkumar). After the funds are received in my account, I will transfer the funds to my family in Sri Lanka who are on the ground and able to assist with purchasing the items needed and distributing to the areas in dire need.
The anticipated timeline for the first withdrawal is tomorrow and after the funds are received in my account (within 2-5 business days) it will be ready to be utilised. So likely between Wednesday 1st and Friday 3rd May.
We will be collaborating with a trusted source (Voice for Voiceless foundation) to identify exactly what the need is and where the need is however all purchases and distributions will be done by my family.
At this stage, the needs of the families affected are changing daily (as a result of donations from other parties and the varied stages of recovery of patients in hospitals). As such I will be unable to confirm the exact items that will be purchased using the funds. However please see below for a rough list of items we intend to purchase: Sugar Milk powder Tea Coffee Toothpaste Toothbrush Soap Water bottles Soft bed sheets Pillows Sarongs Slippers Blood pressure monitor Ambu bag Laryngoscope Laryngeal mask Pulse oxinator Dhal Rice Other dry rations
We will provide a further update next week and confirm the items purchased and provide copies of receipts when possible.
In the mean time, should you have any questions, please feel free to contact either myself, Preetika or Anisha for any further information.
Keep sharing and donating. Every $1 counts and will go a long way in assisting these families in need.
