I am Gobinda Chhantyal. Many of you know me as a civic activist and indigenous rights advocate. For over two decades, I have been relentlessly involved in Nepal’s indigenous movement, including in the capacity of the Vice-Chairperson of the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) as well as the advisor to the Nepal Chhantyal Association, while also collaborating with national and international indigenous organizations. I have been participating in rights-based movements and civic campaigns, speaking, organizing and writing on behalf of the culturally marginalized and materially deprived in Nepal. This time, I am extending a call for care, support and solidarity to you all, for an unanticipated terrible tragedy has befallen my family.

My wife Shanti Manandhar, a Kathmandu Newar native and a life-long school teacher by profession, has been diagnosed with stage-four ovarian cancer, as we found out in October, 2024. Following the oncologist’s advice to urgently begin the treatment process, Shanti has so far faced with utmost strength three rounds of chemotherapy, followed by a critical surgery at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre in Delhi, India, and then another four rounds of chemotherapy. The treatment procedure, which also involves oral medicine and injections, is expected to continue for at least the next three years. During this time, we will also need to visit the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Hospital in Delhi every six months as part of the follow-up procedure.

So far, the total treatment costs have reached around NPR 26 hundred thousand (26 Lakhs), of which about NPR 16 hundred thousand (16 lakh) was raised through friends, relatives, well-wishers, including those from the Indigenous and Chhantyal communities. A heartfelt gratitude. Looking ahead, based on the nature of upcoming treatments and follow-up needs, we estimate we will need around NPR 30 hundred thousand (30 lakhs) to last us the treatment procedure.

Committed to social activism and teaching, together we organized our family life around what we consider a humble lifestyle; something that we chose as life’s pathway. However, Shanti’s current health condition and the treatment procedure that is involved to fix it, means that we are not able to meet the treatment cost on our own. And hence, this call to you all – our friends, families, colleagues, well-wishers – to offer us a financial lift by joining our hands, like family, in overcoming this ordeal that life has thrown in our direction.

म गोबिन्द छन्त्याल । तपाईंहरूसँगै धेरैले मलाई नागरिक अभियन्ता र आदिवासी अधिकारका पक्षधरको रूपमा चिन्छन् । दुई दशकभन्दा बढी समयदेखि म नेपालका आदिवासी आन्दोलनमा निरन्तर संलग्न रहँदै आएको छु—नेपाल आदिवासी जनजाति महासंघ (नेफिन)को उपाध्यक्षको रूपमा र नेपाल छन्त्याल संघको सल्लाहकारको भूमिकासँगै राष्ट्रिय तथा अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय विभिन्न आदिवासी संस्थाहरूसँग सहकार्य गर्दै म अधिकार-केन्द्रित आन्दोलनहरू र नागरिक अभियानहरूमा सहभागी हुँदै आएको छु—नेपालका सांस्कृतिक रूपमा बहिष्कृत र आर्थिक रूपमा बञ्चित समुदायहरूका पक्षमा बोल्दै, लेख्दै र संगठित हुँदै क्रियाशील छु ।

यस पटक भने, म तपाईंहरू सबैसँग हातेमालो र ऐक्यबद्धताको आह्वान गर्दैछु । एक अप्रत्याशित दुःखद् दुर्घटनाले हाम्रो परिवारलाई गहिरो चोट पुर्‍याएको छ ।

मेरो श्रीमती शान्ति मानन्धर, काठमाडौँकी नेवार समुदायकी मूलबासी र लामो समयदेखि शिक्षिका पेशामा संलग्न रहनुभएकी उहाँलाई २०२४ अक्टोबरमा डाक्टरहरूले चौथो चरणको डिम्बाशयको क्यान्सर (ओभेरियन क्यान्सर) भएको पत्ता लाग्यो । क्यान्सर विशेषज्ञको सल्लाहअनुसार तत्काल उपचार सुरु गर्नुपर्ने भएपछि शान्तिले अहिलेसम्म अत्यन्त धैर्यपूर्वक तीन चरणको किमोथेरापी, दिल्लीको राजीव गान्धी क्यान्सर इन्स्टिच्युट एण्ड रिसर्च सेन्टरमा गम्भीर प्रकृतिको शल्यक्रिया र त्यसपछि थप चार चरणको किमोथेरापीको उपचार लिएका छन् । अहिले पनि उपचार प्रक्रिया अगाडि बढिरहेको छ जसमा औषधि र इन्जेक्सन समेत छन्, र आगामी तीन वर्षसम्म निरन्तर उपचार आवश्यक पर्ने देखिएको छ । यस अवधिमा हामीले हरेक छ÷छ महिनामा दिल्लीको उक्त अस्पतालमा फोलोअपका लागि जानुपर्ने पनि हुन्छ ।

अहिलेसम्मको कुल उपचार खर्च करिब २६ लाख रुपैयाँ पुगेको छ, जसमा करिब १६ लाख रुपैयाँ हामीले आफन्त, साथीभाइ, शुभचिन्तक तथा आदिवासी र छन्त्याल समुदायका सदस्यहरूबाट सहयोगस्वरूप जुटाएका हौं । यस आत्मीय सहयोगप्रति हामी गहिरो कृतज्ञता प्रकट गर्दछौं । तर आगामी उपचार र फोलोअपको प्रकृति हेर्दा डाक्टरको सुझावको आधारमा हामीलाई थप करिब ३० लाख रुपैयाँ आवश्यक पर्ने देखिएको छ ।

हामी दुवै सामाजिक सेवामा समर्पित र शिक्षण पेशामा संलग्न हुँदै सरल जीवनशैलीलाई अपनाउँदै आएका छौं, जुन हाम्रो जीवनदर्शन पनि हो । तर शान्तिको अहिलेको स्वास्थ्य अवस्था र उपचार प्रक्रियाको खर्चले हामीलाई आर्थिक रूपमा निकै ठूलो चुनौती दिएको छ । त्यसैले हामी तपाईंहरू सबै— हाम्रा साथीभाइ, परिवारजन, सहकर्मी, शुभचिन्तकहरूलाई यस कठिन घडीमा परिवार झैँ हातेमालो जुटाउँदै यो विपत्तिलाई पार गर्न आर्थिक समर्थन-साथ जुटाउनु हुन अनुरोध गर्दछौं । यस अपिलले तपाईहरूमा पर्न जाने असरप्रति क्षमाप्राथी छौं । तपाईंहरू सबैको साथ, सहयोग र माया पाएर हाम्रो परिवार पुनः आफ्नो सामान्य दिनचर्यामा फर्कने विश्वासमा छौँ ।

हामी तपाईंहरूको माया, सहयोग र ऐक्यबद्धताप्रति हार्दिक धन्यवाद तथा कृतज्ञता व्यक्त गर्दछौं ।
