Update: since our initial fundraiser we were able to fence one of the plots of land meaning our dogs can run free securely during the day. See invoice below. However shortly after we did the fencing storm Dana hit. Whilst some fencing was damaged we are slowly repairing it. However we are in further trouble now as we are still waiting on building permits and the torrential rain again over the past week has caused more problems.
Due to the heavy rain showers of last week we are not much on social media. The misery started last Friday when we had another landslide. This one was not too bad but after the heavy rain on Wednesday, when there was more than 90 liters, we had more slides which completely destroyed a kennel This happened on Thursday morning around 6:30 am. We were up early because we had to pick up Buddy from his foster Liz Taylor so that he would go to boarding kennels for his transport on Saturday but unfortunately after driving 100 meters the road turned out to be completely blocked. Fortunately Liz offered to bring Buddy. Because the dogs were very restless, especially Leo, we turned on the lights at the kennels. What we saw gave us the fright of our lives. Leo's kennel had been washed away and there was a big pile of mud. Leo was stuck in the mud up to his belly a little further. We pulled him out and fortunately he was not physically injured but the fear was in his eyes. Fortunately the other kennels were still safe but given the rain we will have in the coming days we have to be alert 24 hours a day and hope that nothing will shift anymore. Unfortunately we are still waiting for the building permits for the permanent kennels, until then we will have to solve it again with temporary kennels in another place so that we can start reinforcing everything so that there will be no shifting at that location because a number of permanent kennels will be placed there soon. The contractor wants to place concrete or very large rocks with a drainage system for rainwater against the mountainside. This has to be done over a length of 40 meters. But this can only be done if the 28 dogs that are in the temporary kennels there are moved. So again extra costs for emergency solutions and also reinforcing the mountainside will cost a lot But we can't endanger the dogs by leaving them there It's such a shame that it takes so long in Spain before you are allowed to build something because if the permanent kennels had already been there this would not have happened. The heavy rain with storm Dana 1 and 2 has saturated the ground and with the heavy rain of last week you get more landslides. We hope that it will stay in place for the next few days but if it continues to rain like it has for 4 hours now then I am afraid that the other 7 kennels will have to be evacuated
ÁLORA DOG RESCUE is a registered, non-profit organization that focuses on taking care of and rehoming stray and abandoned dogs in the region of Álora, Málaga, Spain.
We provide food, shelter, love, socialization and veterinary care for dogs that have been a victim of abuse and/or abandonment while we search for a permanent and safe home for them so they can have a second chance to a better life.
To date we have successfully had thousands of dogs rehomed in europe - mainly Netherlands, uk, Belgium and even more as far as Sweden.
We weren’t able to
stay at the place we were renting and therefore we had to urgently to relocate with very little time. We now need funds to, in the first instance, to build proper kennels for the dogs to allow them to recover comfortably and safely. We have also just been impacted the storms in Spain and so need help repairing what we have.
Therefore we are asking all our supporters for any donations possible - even 1 euro will help towards us setting up our rescue so we can continue to save dogs in the area.
