Fundraising for Kidney Research UK

George & Jack -

Our Dad has been diagnosed with an extremely rare kidney condition called ADTKD (Autosomal Dominant Tubulointerstitial Kidney Disease). Simply put, with the genetic mutation he has, a protein within the kidney degenerates the organ leading to kidney failure. The presentation for every patient is different and degeneration can begin as early as late teens.

There are an estimated 7.2 million people in the UK living with chronic kidney disease. That’s more than 10% of the entire population with Six people dying every week waiting for a kidney transplant in the UK.

There is research happening around rare kidney conditions but they need more funding.

We have decided that instead of feeling completely and utterly helpless, we can raise money that may benefit subsequent generations.

 Emma -

Lucy, Simon’s wife, is an old (sorry Lu) friend of mine and to listen to a dear friend and devoted Mum deliberating over how and who she might be able to save with her own kidney, is heart breaking. If all four boys have inherited the condition, they won’t be able to help each other with transplants. If three have – there will only be two possible matches within their immediate family, The boys can’t help Simon as they may need to help their own offspring or their brothers.

Sadly, there is no cure for this condition and it is genetic. Meaning there is a 50% chance his 4 boys may have inherited it too.

Unfortunately, Simon’s condition has got progressively worse to the point where his kidney function is at 19% and whilst he has become stringent about his lifestyle and diet, it is unlikely to make much difference, with transplant/dialysis being his only option.

Emma, George, Jack and Hannah -

A fund-raising event is being organised for the 4th October 19.30 at Winchester Rugby Club and we have a skydive booked during organ donation week through kidney research uk, with two of the boys and my daughter. For this we need to raise at least £500 each, hence the target of £2000

However, we want this page to be a general fundraiser and every single penny will go to this amazing but lesser known charity.

Please help us fund the research in the hope that the super scientists can give other families like them, some hope! If you can’t donate you can still help by starting conversations with your friends and family about living kidney donation, and spreading the word about the difference that it makes or join the deceased donor register.
