Fundraising for Jonathan Gramling

Donation protected

Dear Beloved Community,

On Wednesday, June 27th, 2018, after months of health complications, including fatigue, shortness of breath, and swelling, our friend Jonathan Gramling, was taken to urgent care at Cambridge Hospital. He was immediately admitted to the emergency room, where he was informed that he was suffering from kidney failure in both kidneys, an enlarged heart and had a dangerously low blood count.  The Hospital staff began treatment immediately; this includes blood transfusions and dialysis. As of now, Jonathan does not have a discharge date and he has begun the process of finding a matching kidney donor, but even in the best of circumstances it could be close to a year before a transplant would happen (more on that as it develops).

Overnight, J’ and his loved ones’ lives took a quick and sobering turn. We are incredibly grateful that he is receiving great treatment from the staff at CHA, and we are also aware that while he is in treatment he will not be able to work and make the money that he needs for his and his families survival (yes, capitalism). Those of us who know Jonathan, know him for a myriad of reasons; his insightful intellect, his love and fathering of his beautiful children Asha-Le and Naomi, his incredibly moving and soulful voice that has graced churches, clubs, and universities across the world.  Chances are that if you know J’, you yourself have been moved by his immense talent and beautiful soul.

His singing and rhyming with groups like Soulfège, Hi-Fi Monk, Foundation Movement, Ghetto People Band and others has touched thousands and thousands of people. Sadly, for many musicians, Jonathan included, there is no retirement fund, no strong health care options, and no sick pay. We want to make sure we can get some funds in Jonathan's bank account to help him and his family stay afloat for the next few weeks or months while he's unable to work.

In light of Jonathan's priceless contributions to all of our lives, through his selflessness, advocacy and supreme artistry, we are launching this 'GoFundMe' to do what our society has failed to: provide a safety net for those whose boundless creativity gives our lives meaning. We ask that you give as generously as you are able, and spread the word to others who have been touched by Jonathan's voice and spirit. Together we can help lift our brother up in his time of need, as he has done for so many of us. We need your donation and any amount that you can give will be received with gratitude and love. Please give whatever amount you can.

With love and in faith,
