This appeal is for Hanumanth (known also as Tank bund Siva), an orphan from Hyderabad, India, who has selflessly embarked on a mission of saving people who attempt suicide at the Hussain Sagar Lake by jumping in and pulling them out of the waters. Over the years, he has saved about 114 lives and recovered more than 1200 dead bodies.
Despite the dangers of drowning, and contracting water borne illnesses looming large, he selflessly throws his life on the front lines to save the lives of others, expecting nothing in return. On the occasion that he pulls up an unclaimed body, he performs the last rites, giving the body a dignified farewell.

Both the police and the public have immensely benefitted from his services, yet turn a blind eye to Siva’s sufferings. Occasionally, he is offered a mere 200-500 rupees ($2-$7) which is hardly enough to put food on the table. Poverty, as well as a lack of access to educational, medical, and financial resources, has pushed his family (consisting of his wife and six children) to the brink of starvation. With no place to call home and no resources to build one, the family lives in a make-shift tent which is their only refuge, rain or shine. His son has a life-threatening heart disease for which he cannot afford treatment. Having no access to clean drinking water or even a meal most days, no education, job, life or medical insurance, the family constantly battles with life for their day to day survival.
The government of Karnataka conferred a Doctorate for his services but the degree would not serve his dire financial needs.
This appeal for help is an earnest request on Siva’s behalf to rekindle the generosity of your hearts. Any financial help that you might be able to offer can help Siva and his family in a big way. His son’s heart surgery, his children’s basic education, a place to call home, and an auto-rickshaw as a means of earning an income are his only needs. Help can also come in the form of contacts, if you happen to know people in power or position, who can convert his volunteer services into a paid job so he can make a living.
