SecureGun: Help Make US Safe

Donation protected
Families and community members across the country were once again saddened by the horrific acts of gun violence that took place in Florida last week. Immediate action MUST be taken in order to prevent such tragic events from occurring in the future.

Over the past decade, there have been several heated debates about gun control, making it a very sensitive topic that has torn this country apart. We, team Guns and Roses, have decided to take a different approach to the issue. To shift the focus of this issue away from politics, we have provided a creative technological and innovative solution.

We are seven high school students from the Dallas, Texas area. We are mentored under the discoverSTEM Young Innovators program in which we identify key world problems and innovate solutions to these problems. Under this program, we have created the “SecureGun”, a smart gun that is designed to prevent mass shootings using an artificially intelligent image processing algorithm and a GPS. The advanced technologies of the SecureGun either permit or deny the gun from shooting, based on the location and surrounding environment of the gun. For example, if the gun is in sensitive public locations like schools, theatres etc., and if the gun ‘sees’ that it is pointed at unarmed humans, it will lock itself from spraying bullets. Had this innovation been implemented earlier, shootings such as the Mandalay Bay shooting and the recent Parkland High School shooting could have been prevented.

This idea balances the competing requirements of the second amendment, a citizen’s constitutional right to bear arms, while still keeping the public safe from the misuse of guns. We are not advocating nor opposing any political entity or parties, but simply presenting a technological solution to mass shootings.

Our innovation is creating waves. We participated in a global innovation competition and this innovation has been evaluated by top scientists and engineers across the world. Now, we have qualified to compete in an international innovation summit hosted by NASA: the final round of the Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge and hope to be recognized as "Pete Conrad Scholars". This final summit is to be held in Florida's Kennedy Space center this coming April. In order for us to be able to participate and  compete in this competition we must raise funds for the accomodation, travel, and registration for the competition. The estimated cost in order for our team of 7 students to travel from Dallas, TX to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and participate is about $7,500. We now depend on YOU to participate and win this prestigious innovation contest. With your support, you can help us make our idea become a reality and help us make the world a safer and happier place for your kids in school and for your family. Thank you for your support. Any donation amount is much appreciated!
