Cycle to fundraise for a Free & Non-Violent school in Nepal

I'm currently volunteering at Heaven Hill Academy in Nepal for two weeks — while preparing for a personal challenge: completing the popular Annapurna Circuit by bicycle instead than on foot.

Did you know? In Nepal, even public schools require families to pay for essentials like books, uniforms, and transport and schools still rely on physical punishment. Since so many families live in poverty, the drop-out rate is extremely high.

But there’s hope!

Founded by Shamser Tapa, Heaven Hill Academy is Nepal’s first completely FREE and NON-VIOLENT school. It’s a safe, supportive place where children can learn without fear — but the school doesn’t receive any government funding. It survives entirely thanks to donations and volunteer support.

Shamser’s mission:

- Free education for every child

- Free school buses (some kids would otherwise walk two hours or more!)

- Safe, non-violent schools

- High-quality education to create real opportunities

- Inclusive education for children with disabilities, rural communities, and low-income families

Shamser opened a second school in 2022 in the same region, hosting now more than 450 students in total.

My challenge:

The Annapurna Circuit is a popular hiking route in the Himalaya that winds around the Annapurna I (8,901m). However, it's way less common to complete the (partially parallel) route by bike, as very challenging. The route will bring me up to 5,416m and I'm planning to complete it solo, over 12 days/stages.

My goal:

I'm very lucky to be able to experience first-hand the great impact a small gesture can have on these children. My hope is to raise money that will go directly into the school, with a priceless influence to the local children's education and future. Any amounts can make a big difference, for example £5 will buy 100 pencils, £20 a set of textbooks, etc.

My target is to raise £150 for each stage completed by bike. I'll start the Circuit on the 3rd May 2025 and I'll do my best to post updates on Instagram here and Strava here, including my return to the school at the end of the cycle to hand the money to Shamser in person!

Sto facendo volontariato presso la Heaven Hill Academy in Nepal per due settimane — mentre mi preparo per una sfida personale: completare il famoso circuito dell’Annapurna in bicicletta invece che a piedi.

Lo sapevi?

In Nepal, anche le scuole pubbliche richiedono alle famiglie di pagare per beni essenziali come libri, uniformi e trasporti, e molte scuole ricorrono ancora alla punizione fisica. Poiché molte famiglie vivono in povertà, il tasso di abbandono scolastico è estremamente alto.

Ma c’è speranza!

Fondata da Shamser Tapa, Heaven Hill Academy è la prima scuola in Nepal completamente GRATUITA e NON VIOLENTA. È un luogo sicuro e accogliente dove i bambini possono imparare senza paura, ma purtroppo la scuola non riceve alcuna sovvenzione pubblica. Sopravvive esclusivamente grazie alle donazioni e al supporto dei volontari.

La mia sfida:

Il Circuito dell’Annapurna è un popolare percorso escursionistico tra le montagne dell’Himalaya che passa attorno all’Annapurna I (8.901 m). Tuttavia, è molto meno comune completare il percorso (a tratti parallelo) in bicicletta, poiché è estremamente impegnativo. Il tragitto mi porterà fino a 5.416m e ho in programma di completarlo da solo, in 12 giorni/tappe.

Il mio obiettivo:

Ho la fortuna di poter vedere in prima persona l’enorme impatto che anche un piccolo gesto può avere su questi bambini. La mia speranza è raccogliere fondi che andranno direttamente alla scuola, con un impatto significativo sull’istruzione e sul futuro dei bambini locali. Ogni contributo può fare la differenza: ad esempio, £5 comprano 100 matite, £20 un set di libri di testo, ecc.

Il mio obiettivo è di raccogliere £150 per ogni tappa completata in bicicletta. Inizierò il Circuito il 3 maggio 2025 e farò del mio meglio per pubblicare aggiornamenti su Instagram qui e su Strava qui, incluso il mio ritorno alla scuola al termine del percorso per consegnare i fondi a Shamser di persona!
