8.46km fundraiser for George Floyd & Belly Mujinga
My name is Alexandru Sones-Dawkins and I am a 21 year old from London, United Kingdom. I have come together with former Brit School classmate Lara Grace Ilori to organise the first Run For Our Future fundraising incentive: a 8.46KM run through Londonin an effort to raise money for three causes that we would like to support in light of the Black Lives Matter movement, paying specific tribute to George Floyd and Belly Mujinga.
100% of the proceeds will be divided between three causes:
- 35% will go to the college fund set up for George Floyd’s daughter. We would love to assist in providing debt free access to higher education for a little girl who may not have other means of reaching her full potential without the burden of life long student loan repayments. This gives her a chance at true social mobility. The distance ran (8.46KM) will honour the 8 minutes 46 seconds taken for George to lose his life.
-35% will go to the fund set up to support the family of Belly Mujinga, the black transport worker who was spat at on shift and later died from Covid-19. The police have closed her case, and we can only begin to imagine the ordeal and distressed placed upon her family and 11 year old daughter. We will begin the run at Victoria Station where Belly worked, to pay tribute to her career in public services.
-The remaining 30% will be pledged to the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust. A London based charity which works with disadvantaged 13-30 year olds in an effort to create a fairer society. The charity was set up in honour of Stephen Lawrence who became one of many tragic victims of racist attacks. He was murdered in 1993 and it took 18 years for his killers to be brought to justice.
The run will take place on 18th of June 2020, starting at Victoria station, and ending at the old Holloway prison, with a kneel at the start to show solidarity with every person who's life has been lost or compromised at the hands of racism.
We will send all accumulated funds between the three causes listed above, and post photographic proof of this. We are are receiving publicity from a local press outlet, and we hope that this cause can receive some public donations. Not only would you be contributing to the lives of two families affected affected by the most brutal examples of racism that both resulted in lives lost, the Stephen Lawrence foundation is a charity which works actively in communities where youth funding cuts from the government, and is an excellent way to support Black, minority ethnic and disadvantaged individuals, helping to dismantle the barriers of oppression.
So far the response to the campaign has been phenomenal. We set an initial target which was doubled within 24 hours and has not stop growing since. We understand now that the sky is the limit for the attainability of this campqaign and we are really pushing to make the biggest impact possible. At this point, we have grown from a small team to an entire cohort existing of ambassadors, creative assistance and volunteers for the day, and for our first ever Race For Our Future, Lara Grace Ilori has been appointed as co coordinator for the event. We are still accepting anyone who would like to participate in any way. Be it through participating in the race, fundraising or volunteering on the day.
