Stevie isn't even 2 years old and he experienced his first painful urinary blockage a few weeks ago. He had to be hospitalized and unblocked only to return home to reblock 2 more times and needing hospitalization again to save his life. He then had to have a life saving surgery on December 15th by Dr. Lindsay called PU surgery.
PU (Perineal Urethrostomy) surgery in cats creates a wider, permanent opening for urination, typically for male cats with recurrent urinary blockages caused by stones or sludge, a common problem due to their narrow urethra. The procedure is effective for preventing future obstructions, offers good long-term quality of life, but requires strict post-op care, including an E-collar, special litter (pelleted paper/newspaper), and moist diet, to manage pain, prevent licking, and reduce recurrence risk, as it doesn't cure the underlying inflammation that comes with feline idiopathic cystitis which is what Stevie will have to be cared for his entire life.
His surgery went well and he is recovering slowly. This requires several medications and supplements to ensure his comfort and success, special food as well, which has added to his already very expensive treatment. The total costs for his repeated hospitalizations and his surgery have been well over 3,000 (USD) plus costs for medications (gabapentin, zorbium for pain, onsior for an anti inflammatory- now on metacam), a med to relax the urethra to aid urination while healing, an expensive antibiotic for urinary infection called veraflox, and a few different supplements to ensure healing. Our sweet boy was able to live and thrive again because of this procedure and we are praying that he continues to heal and do well with this long and difficult recovery. We are so grateful for those that have donated toward Stevie's medical care. We appreciate your generosity! We are making payments toward his procedure and still incurring more costs with ongoing care and medications, food, etc. Please consider donating today to help our Stevie, we have many sanctuary cats under medical care with ongoing expenses.
You can make a difference by donating today to Country Sunsets & Kitties Sanctuary Inc. We are a Lifetime cat sanctuary for special needs and feral/community cats located in Murray, Iowa.
We thank-you so much! Safe and blessed holidays to you all!
