This fundraiser was originally set up to provide the family with financial support whilst Penny was undergoing treatment. I now hope that the money can be used to go towards a fantastic holiday for Richard, Amiee and Florrie to somewhere that Penny always wanted to see, or perhaps another suitable tribute as the family see fit.

Those of you who know Richard and Amiee Giles and their family will be sad to know that their 8-year-old daughter Penny has recently been diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing treatment at the Royal Marsden Hospital.
The family has been through an extremely distressing and challenging time over the last couple of months. Richard and Amiee have been unable to work whilst they focus on Penny’s treatment and also trying to make sure that things remain as normal as possible for her younger sister Florrie.
I have decided to start this fundraiser to give people the opportunity to show their support. It would be fantastic to give the family some financial support during this incredibly tough time where they have many additional expenses including the cost of regularly travelling to and from London alongside the loss of earnings. At this time doctors have indicated that Penny’s treatment could be ongoing for the next 1 to 2 years.

Either side of Christmas the frequency of Penny’s growing pains and her increasing extreme dislike for the cold led to several visits to the doctors that resulted in a referral to a physiotherapist for Hypermobility. But within days her Mum and Dad decided they were uncomfortable with the diagnosis and returned to the doctor to request blood tests. Those blood tests led to an emergency referral and the first mention of the possibility of the ‘C’ word.
Penny arrived at the William Harvey Hospital for further tests on the 17th January and wouldn’t return home until four weeks later with the devastating diagnosis of Lymphoma and/or Leukemia (to this date tests are still not 100% conclusive). What was for certain was that Penny had been diagnosed with cancer and after a worrying and confusing week at her local hospital she was transferred to St Georges Hospital in London where she began a programme of Steroids and Chemotherapy.
As well as dealing with the shock of what was happening to her, Penny also spent a scary week on the Intensive Care unit at St Georges due to difficulties with her breathing. After four days back on the children’s ward she stabilised and was transferred to the Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey to continue her physical recovery after a significant weight loss and period of bed rest.
On the 15th February Penny was finally allowed to return home, but after only ten days she was readmitted to the Royal Marsden where she has been for over a week due to a mystery infection. A complete lack of immune system being one of the many unfortunate side-effects of her chemotherapy. We are hoping that Penny will be back home again soon.
