My brother-in-law, Mike Polak, is a fun loving guy, Boston sports fan and lover of hockey. He is the primary care giver for his mom, Jane, who is vision impaired and a diabetic. Mike manages her medication, takes her to doctors’ appointments, and gets her where she wants to go. This past week, Mike was rushed to the hospital after being treated earlier in the week for an infection in his foot. The infection was very, very serious and spreading fast. The doctors tried numerous medications to get the infection under control but nothing was working. My husband, Tim, got a call from the hospital with only one real option to stop the infection. A decision he would have to make in order to save his brother’s life. The only way to stop the infection from spreading further would be to remove his foot and leg below the knee. A life changing decision that will require a long recovery and a huge change to his way of life. Mike is still in the hospital and will undergo a few more procedures. It’s unclear how long he will be in the hospital and what will follow. What we do know is that he will need lots of help in many ways.
