Fundraiser for Medina Salleh

On October 2nd 2018, Medina Salleh had a major stroke in Kismayo, Jubbada Hose, Somalia. Because of a lack of access to medical care, general security issues as well as her complicated health situation (she has diabetes and heart issues) she was brought to Kenya by her family. Medina spent a few days in the refugee camp Dhagaxley, located in Dadaaab Refugee Camp. This is significant because the few days after a stroke are a crucial time for treatment and possible recovery. Time she lost because she’s a Somali national and her only option to enter Kenya and receive medical care was to register as a refugee.

After being registered as a refugee she was taken by family to Nairobi, Kenya and admitted to Aga Khan Hospital. After being assessed by a doctor she is currently being treated for her stroke as well as a host of other issues which are complicating her situation. Medina has a blood clot in her heart and about 50 ml of blood in her brain. She is in a critical condition but doctors are confident in her recovery. After her stroke she lost movement in her body’s extremities, arms and legs as well as her ability to speak and recognize people around her. Thankfully after treatment she has gained some movement on the right side of her body and is expected to get better.

Medina has 5 children, 4 daughters and a son but her son is the only person in her immediate family who lives here in Edmonton, Alberta and is capable of financially supporting her through her treatment. She is a widow and her husband Carab Cabdullahi passed away in 2015.

The stay at the hospital is $1500 USD per night. Her son, while capable of covering some of the cost, will most likely not be able to cover it all. He works, and is a part-time student.

As such, her son is hoping those in the local Edmonton community and all who wish to help out, donate whatever they can.

The goal is to be able to raise $15,000 USD to cover the costs of her hospital stay as well as her treatment.

Medina Salleh is a mother, much like any of our mothers and like many of the mothers in Somalia, in a situation where she is hindered by a lack of access to healthcare in her home country.

Let’s make sure she gets the help she desperately needs and deserves.

The funds collected here will be withdrawn and passed along to her son Garaad Buralle to deliver to Medina Salleh.
