Hi
We are Rebecca, Harley & Savannah, our mum, Lorraine, is currently undergoing specialised treatment in China for a rare form of Breast Cancer.
Our journey so far has been a challenging one.
Mum had a fall in July where she fell on her breast. It blew up overnight to the size of a small watermelon.
Initially it was thought to be a haematoma. But as it kept expanding quickly, we knew something wasn't right. Eventually, the pressure built up and it burst open, creating an 11cm abscess in her breast.
For the last 6 months we have been undergoing numerous tests and management issues.
Mum has a metaplastic squamous cell, triple negative fungating breast cancer ( only about 2% of all breast cancers). It is very rare.
While the Doctors, Silverchain and the Hospital in Perth have provided as much support and the best treatment options they can provide, it is extremely aggressive.
Throughout this period, mum has had back to back serious infections in her breast, requiring constant treatment in hospital.
Daily management and wound care for the cleaning, disinfecting and management of the constant exudation from the wound is intensive. She hasn't been able to get out of the house due to significant and constant bleeding episodes which hospitalise her almost every week.
This has been a particularly scary part of the process as she has lost so much blood, she is at risk of dying before the cancer even takes hold.
As a consequence, we found some revolutionary treatment in China which could save her life. While the treatment so far has been amazing, because of the aggressive advancement of the tumor, by the time we got to China, Mum was in poor condition.
Mums struggled with kidney damage, liver damage, more extreme blood loss, white blood cell count issues just to name a few.
To continue treatment, they have to stabilise her first so shes strong enough to cope with the next round of treatment. The initial costs have tripled due to the complications.
As a family, we have raised as much money as we can, but the treatment costs are daily. As the money depletes, treatment will also cease. We would like to continue treatment to hopefully save her life.
The whole thing has been incredibly difficult not just on mum's physical health but her mental health too (google fungating tumor if you want to see how horrific they are! ). Due to the circumstances, I have also been mum's full time carer for the last 6 months.
We are not normally people to ask for money, but under the circumstances we are kind of desperate.
Anything you can do to help would be really much appreciated
Thank you
