About this Fundraiser
Urban Atabex Organizing and Healing in Community Network is offering it’s Education for Liberation Power and Oppression Workshop in New York City this Spring as a fundraiser for the Bronx-based community organization, FIERCE.
Fabulous Independent Educated Radicals for Community Empowerment (FIERCE) was founded in 2000 by a group of primarily LGBTQ youth of color who believed we must realize and manifest our collective power to transform our conditions, shape our futures and become effective agents of change. FIERCE continues to serve as one of the nation’s few grassroots organizations whose mission is to build the leadership of LGBTQ youth of color in community organizing for social justice.
FIERCE is led by LGBTQ youth of color from NYC who want to end homelessness and the conditions that contribute to it. 40% of NYC’s homeless population are LGBTQ youth. An LGBTQ young person has 120% greater chance of being homeless. 60% of FIERCE members are homeless or in assisted or transitional housing. FIERCE uses education, community organizing, restorative, and healing justice to support personal goals and build collective power. FIERCE has always been a brave space—a place where young people can begin to heal from trauma and co-create safety, wellness and liberation from the inside out.
About the Workshop
Education for Liberation: Power and Oppression is a 2-day workshop for educators, organizers, youth and community members. This is an introduction to the concepts of Marxist, Brazilian educator, Paulo Freire, who believed through education we could free ourselves. This hands-on, experiential workshop shows participants a practical approach to applying Freire’s methodology to community organizing. Using a race, class, gender lens, the participants and facilitators use their own experience to analyze the world in order to transform it. This workshop was created by Esperanza Martell and has been offered in different communities since 1987.
Three Ways to Support
1: Participate in the Workshop
We are looking forward to having a full house at this workshop!! Each participant is asked to donate $350 and there are scholarships available to those who can’t afford the full amount. You will be offered a discounted rate plus be asked to volunteer a certain amount of hours at FIERCE before the workshop takes place. To apply for a scholarship, please email Kathy Crawford at [email redacted], or at [email redacted].
Once you’re ready to sign up, simply donate the $350 right here on GoFundMe and leave a comment saying you’re registering for the workshop. If you will be applying for a scholarship, please wait until you have spoken with Kathy before donating.
2: Donate Without Participation
Please consider donating any amount you can even if you cannot participate in the workshop. Not only will you help us reach our goal of $5,500, but you will make it possible for us to give scholarships to those who can participate but can’t afford the full donation amount.
All proceeds from this fundraiser will go to FIERCE, with the exception of the fees charged by GoFundMe for their payment processor affiliate (i.e.PayPal) of 2.9% + $.30 per transaction.
