Fundraiser for Family of Don Juan
Don Juan Tango Paima - loving teacher, husband and father - passed away on Sunday, July 4, 2021, at the age of 70 in Iquitos, Peru.
Don Juan was born on March 29, 1951 in the Neiva region of Cali, Colombia. He immigrated to Iquitos, Peru, at the age of 4 with his family.
Don Juan came from a lineage of great healers. He was a highly respected curandero who cared deeply for his family, friends and community. He dedicated over 50 years of his life to the practice of curanderismo, never turning away those in need, regardless of circumstance. Don Juan always said that "this was his work" and that his life's purpose was to help and serve those in need.
Don Juan had an infectious sense of humor and loved joking around with his friends and family. He believed that laughter was the best medicine and he knew how to make you smile. He was charismatic and a wonderful entertainer, always sharing awe-inspiring stories with his guests. Visiting with Don Juan was always a wonderful experience ♡
Juan enjoyed sharing his wisdom and gifts with those who came to him, drawn to the path of ayahuasca shamanism, or the "science" as he would call it. He was a great teacher and friend to many & he will be missed, especially by those who truly knew and loved him.
Juan leaves behind his wife, Leonor, their ten children and many grand-children. He was a loving father who cared deeply for his family. Unfortunately, Juan was the sole provider for his family and this will be a difficult transition for his wife and children. They will need some time to grieve and adjust to life without him. We kindly ask for your support during these difficult moments. All donations will go directly to his wife, Leonor and their children.

************************************* In honor of Don Juan - written by Carlos Tanner, one of Don Juan's first apprentices: In 2003 I first came to the Amazon rainforest town of Iquitos, Peru, and met an amazing person named don Juan Tangoa. My experiences with him on that trip were profound and memorable, to say the least. He saved my life. He also invited me to be his student, and six months later I moved to Iquitos to live with him and his family and study the science of plant medicine. To say he changed the course of my life would be an incredible understatement.
Sadly, don Juan passed away this morning, after a long deterioration of his health. He was beyond unique and beyond special. There really are no words to describe this human being. He was the grandson of a Chinese herbologist and Peruvian vegetalista, and he referred to his tradition as the Black Panther and Green Dragon.
As a teenager, he left the plant medicine path temporarily to fight for the US in the Vietnam war, where he was injured and received the purple heart. He traveled the Amazon studying with various healers and lived with the Achuari in northern Peru before following his visions to Iquitos to find his wife, Leonor. He was one of the first curanderos to bring the ayahuasca tradition to Europe and the US and was featured in the documentary film, Ayahuasca Diary, in which he healed a man of cancer in three weeks.
I had the honor to call him my teacher and my friend and will forever consider his family my own. He leaves on Earth his wife, ten children, I don't know how many grand-children, and one great-grandchild. His energy continues to spread throughout humankind and he will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. Not a day goes by when I don't recall a memory from my time with him, nor will my gratitude for all he shared with me ever fade.
He once told me that he was not from this planet, and that when he passes away he will go to live on a different planet in his next life. I wish him well on his journey and look forward to when we can meet again in another dimension, in another ceremony. May his love and wisdom continue to heal the world.
Your wings have returned, maestro.
