UPDATE: Sadly, after a long 38 days in the hospital, my mom went to rest in the Lord. It happened one day after her birthday (January 10th). Since my mom had been my brother's primary caregiver, I am learning how to do what she has done his whole life. I am not able to work until I can be trained on how to care for him, which means I am not able to work for the foreseeable future. His special needs require medical equipment and specialized materials that I am unable to afford now that we don't have my mom's social security to help cover the costs. Please consider helping us get caught up on these costs so I can focus on preparing to care for my brother.
On December 3, at 3:30 in the afternoon, I received a call informing me that my mother, Euri, was taken to the emergency room due to difficulty breathing. I was informed that her condition was critical (severe pneumonia added to a heart failure) and that I should get to the hospital as soon as possible. That same day I flew to be with her in Puerto Rico. Little did I know that this was the beginning of a long journey that I never dreamed I, my mom, or our family, would have to endure.
Some days she is more alert and can sit up in bed (with a lot of assistance) and follow commands such as squeezing my hands and showing me two fingers. Other days she is very lethargic, weak, and struggles to keep her eyes open. While she has been showing signs of improvement, she remains in a very delicate state. It is going to be a long process of healing and recovery.
Meanwhile, my brother, who has cerebral palsy and lives at home with my mom, has required additional care since my mother (his primary caretaker) has been away from home hospitalized. Due to the severity of the situation, the long road of rehabilitation for my mother, and the need for extra care for my brother and now mother, I will be moving from Florida to Puerto Rico and have to stop working to care for them. A rough estimate of 8-10 months without working, but likely longer since I now will be the primary caretaker for both.
Now without income in Puerto Rico, I am faced with financial insecurity during a time of many major life changes and a great need to support my mom and brother. The purpose of this Go Fund Me is to help finance all the costs associated with caring for my mom and brother, both now and throughout my mom’s rehabilitation.
It means the world to me and my mom that you will think of us, pray for us, and donate to this cause so that I may care for my mom and brother while going through this transition.
Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Thank you to everyone who is already helping us.
May God bless you and your family,
